Ed's View - 3DTV - Why Not Glasses?

By Ed Milbourn • Jan 30 2007, 8:09pm

At least at the start.

There is no doubt (at least in my little mind) that the next big step in television development is the addition of the third dimension - i.e. "3DTV." Interestingly, virtually all of the technical elements are in place to commercialize fully compatible 3DTV.

The one caveat to this statement is...

CinemaScope™ HDHT - Part I - The Concept

By Rodolfo La Maestra • Jan 25 2007, 12:30pm

Anyone can relate to how CinemaScope brings the movie experience to the eyes, some of us can even remember the Cinerama experience over 40 years ago, almost everyone is familiarized with the term and meaning of HDTV, and with HT (Home Theater). So I created the term "CinemaScope HDHT" because it is actually blending the 3 concepts and technologies into one, and this series of articles is about implementing the 3 concepts, at your home, finally with consumer products.

For some people the choice of 16:9 (aspect ratio of 1.78:1 for HDTV) has been...

January 20, 2007 - Alsea, OR -- The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) alerted the press today that legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives to deal with the educational efforts related to the February 18, 2009 "hard date" shut off of...

HD Sports Weekly - January 18th, 2007

By Tom Starner • Jan 19 2007, 3:08am

It's getting closer. Super Bowl XLI, that is.

But before many of us shift into the mindset of "Let's play the freaking game already!" (remember, they are using the two-week gap again), we need to find out who gets to play in the world's biggest single televised sporting event, HD or otherwise (with all due respect to the World Cup).

It's the weekend we football fanboys (and girls) get to soak in all the HD glory of...

HD Sports Weekly - January 11th, 2007

By Tom Starner • Jan 12 2007, 3:05am

When it comes to HD, this is about as good as it gets on the pro football front. The Divisional playoffs, with four more NFL games and another level deeper into the "tournament" (to quote Cowboy coach Bill Parcells, who no doubt will be watching all the NFL action on his massive HDTV). My only fear is one of the networks, in search of even higher ratings, will use T.O. as guest color commentator on a pre-game show, or worse, as a sideline reporter. Ahhhhh!

Anyway, another feast of NFL playoffs in HD...

DIRECTV's HR20 - DVR Debate Rages On

By Tom Starner • Jan 11 2007, 2:41pm

As I write this, the negative/problem posts continue to stack up on DBSTalk.com, a Web forum devoted to satellite TV and its users. Since late summer, that particular forum has been ground zero for a major "debate" of sorts, one that, in essence, separated DIRECTV defenders from detractors (though to be fair, not everyone who posts is firmly on one side or the other).

CES 2007 Predictions

By Shane Sturgeon • Jan 5 2007, 8:11pm

It seems every writer out there loves writing predictions, so I can only assume it's because readers love reading them. Or perhaps it's just because writers want to be right and say "I told you so". Well in that same spirit, I thought I would take a stab at some CES 2007 predictions. I realize some of these may be obvious, or no-brainers, but I think I've stuck my neck out on a couple as well. These are in no particular order...

HD Sports Weekly - January 4th, 2007

By Tom Starner • Jan 4 2007, 4:00pm

Only one thing to say about this weekend when it comes to HD sports: NFL playoffs. After all, this is why many of us went out and bought those big screen HDTVs. For football freaks, it's time for four weekends (remember the week off before the Super Bowl) of total football immersion, where every game counts. And all in glorious HD (if the networks do their jobs right).

And this weekend, there is a special cherry on the top of our football phantasmagoria. On Monday night...
