The very ability to inspect and view an HDMI video source goes directly against the copyright capability of the connection since the means to see it would infer a means to steal it.
At this time the Panasonic PTAE-1000U has been kept in the stable just for the purpose of using the Wave Form Monitor feature.
While the Wave Form Monitor does suffer when looking at high frequency response video such as bursts, it is also the perfect tool for checking IRE levels and color decoding.
This does come with the limitation of only being able to check YPbPr output, preventing me from verifiying the switching to RGB output that would be required for a DVI input.
Some of the results are based on visual calibration checks as well as signal and are noted.
All tests were performed using Digital Video Essentials as the source material.

Since 2006, OPPO has been providing a DVD performance envelope covering the main feature, the movie, at roughly the $200 mark directly competing with other players and external scalers costing $1000 plus.
They have been earning my recommendation since then along with a full model line review last year.
When it was announced that OPPO was releasing a flag ship DVD player at nearly double the price, I requested a review sample to find out how OPPO has raised the bar on an already very successful product line.
As with past models...

Well the folks at OPPO Digital are at it again.
This time they have released a new high end Up-Converting DVD player.
The DV-983H is the new gold standard in up-converting DVD players.
It incorporates Video Reference Series processing (VRS by) Anchor Bay.
This is the same technology used in video processors costing $3000 or more.

It is no secret that the HT Guys like and recommend Oppo Digital upconverting DVD players.
We have reviewed the current lineup of DV-970HD, OPDV971H, and DV-981HD players in the past.
Today we take a look at the new Oppo Digital DV-980H.
Essentially the 980 is the same as a 970 but with 1080p and better audio capability for just $20 more.
This review will not be as detailed as previous Oppo reviews because we found that the performance was similar to the 970.
We'll concentrate on what is new or what has improved.

In the summer of 2005 I came across a well regarded DVI upconverting DVD player from a new kid on the block by the name of OPPO and decided to give it a whirl.
This culminated in August of 2005 into a Review in Progress report for the OPDV-971HD in which I gave the product a very high rating.
I have been recommending OPPO ever since.
Since then, OPPO has released another model, the DV-970HD.
The DV-970HD added HDMI output, SACD and DVD Audio, analog audio with the ability to turn the video stages off for better audio reproduction, and a unique 480i output directly from the disc for the scaling videophile.

The Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK can be thought of as a digital video Swiss Army knife.
It has a built in ATSC tuner, DVD recording capability, VHS Playback and dubbing, and its an upconverting DVD player (up to 1080p via HDMI) to boot.
So with all this capability we were excited when the unit showed up at the home offices of the HT Guys.
On paper this device was too good to be true.
So how did it fare in the real world?

We have both gone on record saying that we are going to wait out the next generation DVD format war.
But Ara gave in and bought a HD DVD drive for his xBox 360 at Christmas.
Braden is still holding out as are many people.
So what are your alternatives.
You can buy an upconverting DVD player that will supposedly take your standard DVDs and make them compatible with HD resolutions.
