Audio Video lip sync notice

Postby hdresearcher » 17 Jan 2014, 13:28

In consumer blogs and forums I have noticed many complaints concerning audio video sync in HD reception in the home. As we know in the broadcast industry, there are multiple issues mainly to do with delays in the audio video timing, where delay path issues exist due to processing techniques unique to digitization of these signals. There are times when fixed delays for Audio Video are not the answer because of various path delays which are different in transmission of the HDTV signal to the home and the different processing delays in the HDTV receiver itself.

Video and audio synchronization is a growing problem but there are approaches being discussed by the industry through a workgroup being sponsored by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and I thought your readers would find this information insightful. As this is the issuing body for standard practices for the industry, SMPTE has a long and successful history of problem solving for Motion Pictures and Television Engineering. Please review the following website https://www.smpte.org/standards-webcasts where a blog is being given by Paul Briscoe. It shows where the broadcast industry is heading, and let’s hope the HDTV set manufacturers will as well!
