Thanks that explains a lot akirby. I read that too and it left me scratching my head. I just assumed it meant the audio from the monitor/TV signal as I couldn't take it on myself to believe an AV device that I supports HDMI 1.3a didn't support audio. I have paired TOSLINK cable with TV/CBL and I'm good now. Thanks a bundle guys.
Cheers,
Danny

I don't get it either. They can't be saving much money by doing that.

Clarification - it passes the audio through to the monitor but does not decode it or play it.
All consumers be very wary of this one

I'm really, really surprised to find this on a Denon. Maybe on a Sony or Pioneer.........

Called Denon tech support, regarding this issue, several times and no one has ever picked up the phone. I left a voicemail and that was 6 days ago

Though my question was answered in this forum I would be pleasantly surprised if they actually returned my call.
Cheers,
Danny
denon ARV- 588 - no audio from speakers

I'm not getting any audio from the Tv to the receiver speakers of my ARV-588. The TV is connected through HDMI connector to my LG tv. I can hear sound from the TV but not from the receiver/speakers. I can hear sound coming from the speakers when I listen to the radio and when I conduct the speaker test therefore I know the speakers are connected properly. Correct me if I'm wrong but using the HDMI, it should provide both audio and video. I see through another post that there may be a defect in that the sound will not come through the HDMI when using the ARV-588, if this true? If that's the case, how can I get sound while still using the HDMI cable. One last thing, in order to program the TV and other devices it says that I should put the input to auto. How can I put it in auto. I was able to do it with the radio but none of the other devices..

What's the source? If you're sending a HDMI signal from your DVR to the TV and then trying to send HDMI from the TV to the AVR that won't work. You need to send all your sources to the AVR first, then to the TV via HDMI. If you're using the TV tuner then you need to check the HDMI output settings on the TV to make sure it's sending audio to the AVR.

I have everything going into the reciever using the HMDI cable. The source on the indicator light is showing TV. I can't get the source indicator other than the radio/tuner to go into auto. In the manual, it shows that everything should be done in auto but I can get the indicator light to show auto. I have rotated through the input with no results.

What I do know is the HDMI on the back of your TV is considered an input. I am not aware of HDMI being a two way street for audio and video which is what you are expecting. Many if not most displays offer a digital audio output via RCA or optical for the internal DTV tuner and that is what you connect to your AV receiver.
The initial context of this thread was about receiving HDMI audio from a source and this receiver will not do that. It only acts as an HDMI video switch, nothing more. That is unrelated to what you are trying to accomplish.

Went to Best Buy and bought an optical cable. I hear sound from the speakers now but it has real bad static associated with the sound. The speakers are center - 2 ft away from source, rf 8 ft away from source, lf 8 ft away from source, lr - 15 ft away from source, rr - 15 ft away from source , and sub woofer is about 2 ft away from source. When I say source, I'm saying the recievers and TV. Anyone has any idea what could be causing the issue with static coming from speakers?
