Thank God I found your post. I've been having the exact same problem as you, and it's been driving me crazy trying to figure out what exactly was wrong.

My set-up is Samsung DVD 960 to Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS via HDMI in and HDMI out to Pioneer PDP-5070HD, and just like in your case, there's no problem when the input source is the cable box.

Please let me know if you find out about the firmware update, as I've basically given up watching DVDs until I get this sorted out.

it turns out that pioneer released a firmware update for the 82 but . . . the idiot repair place took all this time (two months) fixing another problem with my receiver and when i got it back two days ago . . . it didn't work at all. so i took it to the dealer and they are in the process of getting me a new one. and i'm sure i'll have to do the firmware update on that on as well. anyway. i still don't have a receiver or an answer. but try getting the firmware update and see if it helps. good luck.
