House Commerce Members Meet on Telecom Bill
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (R-Tex.) told a group of broadcasters in Washington Tuesday that he and other committee members were having a meeting later that day to try to come to some "bypartisan agreement on a telecommunications bill," which is a rewrite of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Barton plans to mark up the bill in his committee in March.

Barton Voices Support for National Cable Franchising
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Rep. Joe Barton said Tuesday he supports replacing the nation's existing system of local cable TV franchising with a national scheme-a proposal advanced by major telephone companies-and hopes to release a legislative draft on the subject later this week.

News Corp. is betting that people will pay $25-$30 to watch Fox films at home in high-definition quality via cable and satellite TV 60 days after their theatrical release. News Corp. president and chief operating officer Peter Chernin said Tuesday the conglomerate has been "talking to the cable operators and satellite operators" about such an idea.
