As a Texas boy now transplanted to the Northwest, I had to get this DVD- widescreen version.

This is a big production film that a lot of critics and audiences hated. If you like the John Wayne hero worship version of the Alamo, you will be shocked by this David Crockett ( he doen't like to be called Davy) who plays a violin and does not wear a coon skin cap. Crockett sums up the situation " We'er going to need more men". Travis never draws a line in the sand, and most of the film is the history of Texas that drags on as you wait for the battle to start. The film does not end with the Alamo, but at the defeat of Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto that lasted only 18 minutes in reality. Houston's strategy to defeat Santa Anna and create an independent Texas is the focus of the film. The Mexicans speak in Spanish, with sub titles so pay attention.

I was required to take a semester of Texas history way back when. I grew up on the corner of Crockett and Bowie streets, one block from Travis ave. This Alamo comes closer to real history than Hollywood has ever done before. All the characters are flawed men, all trying for a second chance at a new life and fate brings them to their destiny. The sets are very realistic, the battles big scale. The DD 5.1 cannon fire is every bit as good as "Master and Commander"

Take it or leave it. I enjoyed it and will probably celebrate San Jacinto day, April 21st next year with this film.
