Progressive Scan

Kind of quiet on the board so here is a question about connections. I'm trying to get my sister interested in HD, so I thought I would redo the connections on her present TV(a big non HD Sony) to show her how things could look better. Got her a new surround sound system too.

Anyway, when I hooked up the DVD player with component cables to the TV (through the receiver) and tried the progressive scan mode, all I could get was a split screen down the middle. The DVD player thought about this for awhile, didn't like it, and went back to interlaced mode. So, what am I doing wrong?

Also, without the owners manual, how can you tell if a TV is digital?

How old is it? If it does not say HDTV something on the front it likely is not HD and will only accept 480I component, highly recommended over s-video or composite!

Nice to hear from you Richard. The set is not Hd. It is about 2 years old. 4:3 aspect. However, I thought it would still accept a progressive scan through component. But I get two images on the screen with a split down the middle. This is very embarassing for the big brother who is supposed to be the video guru in the family. Only I know that I am not the same as mentioned above, but I am trying to hide it.

Nice hearing from you as well...

 Just tell him the 480P is a 3D effect that requires glasses, you don't have them but you took care of it so he would get one picture...

He should note better colors and color detail. (this part was not a joke)
