The Masters on CBS in HDTV

CBS has done an amazing job of televising this year's Masters golf tournament. The HD PQ has been outstanding! They have really out done themselves this year! Coupled with DD5.1 surround sound CBS has set the standard for all live sports in HDTV! One other plus ... only 4 minutes of commercial time each hour ... and those commercials are in HDTV.

Available in Canada via Star Choice on CBS WWJ-DT Detroit and KIRO Seattle and TSN HD, via Bell ExpressVu on CBS Boston and Seattle and TSN HD Thursday and Friday from 1pm - 4:45pm, on Saturday from 12:30pm - 4:45pm and on Sunday from 11:30am - 4:30pm. Over 16 hours of live coverage.

When CBS Sports presents the 71st U.S. Masters Golf Tournament April 5-8, viewers for the first time ever will have 100 percent HD video coverage of the course.
"The Masters may have the most complete HD hard camera coverage of any event in sports," said Ken Aagaard, senior vice president of operations for CBS Sports. "We've added four more hard cameras this year, so now we have full coverage of every hole at Augusta National Golf Club."

In previous years, CBS Sports had covered four difficult blind spots with handheld cameras, he said, "but now we have HD cameras on 100 percent of the course."

Aagaard added, "The Masters in HD is breathtaking. HD lets us see all the contours of the course, and the greens are spectacular in HD. Once you've seen The Masters in HD, you'll never want to watch it any other way."

Now I'm even more sad that the CBS station in Yuma does not broadcast in HD.

The quality of the HD coverage was excellent but the 4 minutes of commercials per hour is a Masters Committee requirement and not the option of the broadcaster.

I receive it with an over the air antenna and I live in Yuma. Also the HDTV magazine sends me the station menu each day for my zip code.

I agree. It was gorgeous, breathtaking. Absolutely makes the case for HDTV. The technical excellence, of course, but also the camera work by the human crew at the tournament.

Maybe I was blinded by the sight of the beautiful course and the action, but I can't think of a criticism. Well, just one thing: the commentators talk too much, to the point of distracting the players, at times. With video like that, you hardly need to say ANYTHING.

I want an HD camcorder as soon as all the progressive technology is established in the cameras and displays in the marketplace. On my display, I'll also be able to select and print occasional still photos from the video stream.

Of course, 3D is coming, if I live long enough (80 now).
