Pioneer DVD Elite plays back dark areas w/"blotches&quo

I have the Pioneer 46AV Elite DVD player hooked up directly via HDMI ($65) to my Sony SXRD KDS-R60XBR television. Playback on the DVD player is great over all but when a dark scene comes on the picture begins to shows "blotches" in the darkend areas. Wavy blotches that move with the scene. It drives me crazy. Completely distracts me. Has anyone scene what I'm talking about? Can anyone help me correct this. I run playback in the 1920x1080i regulary and have experimentd with the lower levels but without success. What could this be? Any reccommendations? Any solutions are welcome.
