Hi I'm new the forum and I have a question to ask just recently my beloved SonyXBR Trinitron kealed over me.

To make a long story short, I would like to know from one of the Techs on here is it wise to fix this Tv or just to scrap it and purchase a new still undecided which is better in a lighted room plasma, lcd or Dlp?

Those ARE sad times ! But, to "help" , please 'post' again W/ a tad more data - -
i.e. - size of screen, approx age on tube, been repaired prior, how confident are you in your pending repair shop ( used them before, good experience?), nature of your local cable service ?

By that is meant, how are they doing in this 'switch' to digital service - good quality of signal, converted their old distribution to fiber / offer already a 'goodly' combination & quantity of "HD" channels as well as all the local networks in HD ?, etc..

IF your area is going to need standard service for another year because they are "behind" the curve
or perhaps a smaller, private outfit, then, yes, you do need to consider having it repaired.

As of last Sept., all local cable companies agreed to continue providing all-analog to those wanting it thru 2011.

Even with a cable box to standard digital service, your XBR will still likely provide better pictures than some of the current HDTVs do W/ SD.

model number and manufacturing date required to make any comments...

The model no# is KV-32XBR85 the date it was made 1999 I think, cable company is Comcast, yes I had it repaired about 3 years ago had pretty good relations with the service dept. They're a well known Sony Repair people it's just that alot of Techs I have spoke with don't do repairs on older Sony's ect Xbr

I don't know why unless they either don't want to deal with it or can't do component level repair. If you were in my area I would recommend repair. Pricing varies across the country. Expect $200-400 for a repair...

I have spoken with the Sony Repair reps I had with my old contract they told me it would be around 100 for service charge and time, labor, and parts up to max 400.00. The things that me laugh is the service charge, I know everyone has to make a living. But this is funny I need to have to pay some one $100 for them to tell me what I already know.

That initial $100 is also for an estimate or bill of materials - same as a car collision damage estimate for insurance --- I suspect that most good, active shops will allow that to apply to the ultimate $400 charges IF also done at same time -- i.e. - authorized while XBR is all apart on bench, not a week later when it has had to be reassembled / put back someplace else.

Service charge is separate parts and labor come after the $100 service charge, think that is wise?
