Comcast Hits 500 HD Choices Providing Consumers with the Most HD Content Available Anywhere, Anytime PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq:CMCSK, CMCSA), the nation's leading provider of entertainment, information and communications, today announced it has more than 500 high-definition (HD) choices available at any given time and is significantly increasing HD video-on-demand (VOD) movie and television series programming from Showtime, Encore, MoviePlex and Starz. With this content increase, the company strengthens its leadership position in offering more HD movies and programming than anyone else. The company also continues to deliver on its commitment to provide exponentially more choice on TV, including more HD, movies, sports, kids' programs and network TV, first announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show as Project Infinity. "This month, we're adding the most HD content ever," said Derek Harrar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Video Services for Comcast. "We're working with top premium channels like Showtime and Starz to add hundreds of entertainment options in the categories consumers say they want the most...HD movies and television shows." Through this increased content offering, Comcast added more than 150 hours of premium-channel HD programming to its current line-up, which includes: * Showtime added 4x more HD movie and television series hours with hit original shows like "Dexter," "The Tudors" and "Weeds" and movies like Casino Royale and Babel. Adding movie and television content supports recent research findings commissioned by Comcast that showed consumers want to watch HD movies and TV shows on their schedules, not by appointment viewing on linear television (When viewers were asked about their favorite things to watch in HD: 79 percent of people who liked "movies" said they prefer to watch them on their own schedule, while 63 percent of people who liked "TV shows" said they prefer to watch them on their own schedule*). In addition to the largest line-up of HD movie choices available on its video-on-demand (VOD) service, Comcast On Demand also offers many more television series and special programming in May. Currently, Comcast's VOD lineup offers more than 10,000 selections each month, with Comcast customers selecting On Demand more than 100 times per second with over 300 million views per month. Comcast has dragged its feet as much as possible in offering new HD channels. I called the other day to complain that while all of the games offered in the MLB package are originated in HD, none of them are carried in HD by Comcast. Their answer was that they had only so much capacity. As soon as Verizon wakes up to the value of sports in HD, I'm outta here. J. L. in Bethesda MD... Richard • May 19, 6:36pm  it has more than 500 high-definition (HD) choices available at any given time  Now what bit of marketing BS was used to come up with that nonsense? Gotta be something like, that includes all channels across the US... (sigh)... rfowkes • May 20, 6:08am Right on, Richard! Comcast and most of the other cable services have become the latest incarnation of the venerable Snake Oil Salesmen. The crap they spew to take advantage of the general public's lack of knowledge about technology is sickening, in my opinion. Trying to fake the numbers game regarding the amount of HD content is not only misleading but also an insult to those services who are actually trying to increase the number of real HD channels not just focus on insubstantial hype. Another gimmick used by the cable companies involves their totally misleading claim about how their high speed Internet service is "up to five times faster than high speed internet from the phone company." They conveniently choose not to mention that they are comparing their cable modem speeds (up to around 15Mbps) to the DSL offerings from the phone company (peaking at about 3Mbps) and not the fiber offerings from the phone company that are running at 20Mbps speeds. In my neck of the woods the... akirby • May 20, 6:32am  it has more than 500 high-definition (HD) choices available at any given time  Now what bit of marketing BS was used to come up with that nonsense? Gotta be something like, that includes all channels across the US... (sigh) They count each "On Demand" HD movie/show as one HD choice. So they're saying that at any given time you have 500 HD shows to choose from (one for each HD channel plus one for each on demand HD show). Snake oil indeed. And you guys thought DirecTV was guilty of false advertising!... wwiddows • May 20, 1:03pm Like I said in another forum, the key here is CHOICES, not CHANNELS!!!... akirby • May 20, 4:44pm
But if I have 100 HD CHANNELS then I'll actually have, over the course of just one evening (7-11 pm), somewhere around 400 HD CHOICES. And tomorrow night I get a DIFFERENT 400 HD CHOICES. As opposed to HD On Demand where you have the same ones night after night.... More in Category: Programming
