No, they stopped making the ones that defeat it and I got one that was made
after the fact, so I returned it and got a full refund. It was a good
experiment, and even though it failed I learned that it is impossible to
make a box that will defeat a standard that has yet to be fully implemented.
So I would recommend not purchasing anything that claims to defeat HDCP at
this time and wait until the blu-ray/hd-dvd hardware is available and people
have successfully made them work with component outputs before considering a
device like this. In hindsight I'm glad it didn't work since it's such an
unknown. It may be easy for the player manufacturer or content provider to
flash the firmware on my home unit to disallow certain hardware, such as the
hdcp defeating box. Hard to say at this point, though...

The manufacturer received Jason's sample of the product back and told me it
checked out fine on all their equipment. Jason had compatibility problems
with his equipment. His sample was supposed to be the one with the HDCP
compatible chip. The manufacturer did not cease selling the device until
after Jason's purchase. We still refunded his money because he had trouble
with certain of his current generation equipment working through the
product.

My Denon upconverting DVD player and Comcast digital cable box worked
through my sample of the DVI to VGA converter. Another customer's Comcast
box would not work through his Onkyo HDMI switching surround receiver, but
worked fine connected directly to his Visio plasma. His Sony unpconverting
DVD player worked fine through the Onkyo's HDMI switching. I have know
other installers are having problems with Denon HDMI switching receivers
passing the Comcast signal to displays. Go figure! Incompatibilities are
not isolated to the product Jason tried.

Let's be clear. The Dtrovision converter did not "defeat" HDCP encryption.
It complied with it. What made the device unique was the fact that the
wrong chip was sent to Dtrovision by their chip supplier. The DVI to VGA
converter was never intended to pass HDCP! Dtrovision's chief engineer was
alerted to the capability by a purchaser who happened to try it out on an
HDCP encrypted device. Dtrovision never publicly advertised that their
converter would pass HDCP encrypted video. I found out about it because I
saw an ad for the DVI to VGA converter, called the company, and asked them
if the device would pass such a signal. I was still suspicious, so did not
become a dealer for the contraption until after I obtained a sample and had
verified it would work in my system.

While I don't know the particulars ... I believe any company manufacturing,
advertising, or selling these products could be charged for violating the
DMCA. It basically says that it is illegal to break encryption, show how
to break encryption, etc.

Anyone lawyers on the list with further insight?

No, they stopped making the ones that defeat it and I got one that was made
after the fact, so I returned it and got a full refund. It was a good
experiment, and even though it failed I learned that it is impossible to
make a box that will defeat a standard that has yet to be fully
implemented.
So I would recommend not purchasing anything that claims to defeat HDCP at
this time and wait until the blu-ray/hd-dvd hardware is available and
people
have successfully made them work with component outputs before considering
a
device like this. In hindsight I'm glad it didn't work since it's such an
unknown. It may be easy for the player manufacturer or content provider to
flash the firmware on my home unit to disallow certain hardware, such as
the
hdcp defeating box. Hard to say at this point, though...

Alan, I was not intending to bring your name into this, but since you did,
I'll say that I was very pleased with your service and that of the
manufacturer. As much as I like to support small businesses, the return
policy is usually not very good (with good reason), so I was happy to have
your support.

I am very surprised that it checked out for them considering I ran the
following tests using my HTPC, cable box, and jvc 5u d-vhs:

-D-VHS (non Dtheater, such as HDNet content): frame is squeezed vertically,
and signal is 480i or 480p (not sure which one, but I know it's not 1080i,
because the HD convergence mode is not available when watching this content)

-D-VHS (Dtheater): content protected by HDCP, no signal will pass. Message
on screen says non-compliant display detected.

-Time Warner digital cable (Scientific Atlanta 8300HD): at first, the
picture is there, but VERY dark. After 30 minutes or so, it seemed to have
detected something, and disables the HDMI output with a nasty message.

-computer (non-hdcp): picture is about the same

So the product must be incompatible with both the Scientific Atlanta cable
box and the JVC D-VHS unit...

Strange!

Jason

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Jason,

Thanks for the kind words about our support. When business people go home
at the end of the day they are consumers, too. I choose not to be
duplicitous about customer service. It works best for me to treat other
people the way I would want to be treated.

All I have is the manufacturer's word that your sample worked on their gear
(whatever that is) when they got it back. I believe you had the trouble you
describe. Strange, indeed!

Best regards and beautiful pictures,

So were you able to defeat HDCP in your system?
