----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I ran across an article by Pete Putman regarding the new 1080p sets coming
out. This has been discussed on Tips many times but if someone wants a
short, concise opinion on whether or not to rush out and buy a 1080p set,
this piece offers some advice. For any new people on Tips, Pete is very
well known to many of us and used to subscribe to Tips.

Hugh,

Thanks for that link. It obviously matches what Rodolfo has been
saying.....put your Credit Card back in your wallet for at least another
year or two.

Thanks,
Larry

Thank you Mr. Campbell. It just confirms what I've been thinking about this
from the beginning. Now if I could purchase a relatively (relatively being
a broad term) inexpensive 1080i RP CRT set with HDMI
connects or at least DVI with HDCP, I'd consider it. Perhaps if Mits is
making the rush to "1080P" they will heavily discount their existing 1080i
sets. I can only hope.

I read Pete's article with great interest, but I really don't get it.

The initial buyers of 1080P monitors and sets are likely to be folks who've
been HD savvy for some time. If the products are going to dissapoint, how
will this help the manufacturers sell more of these items?

Except for the few true videophiles who use this forum, I can't believe
these new sets are going to display HD, SD, and Analog poorly.

I'm not going to run out and buy one, but I am considering an "upgrede" for
my 3 year old Hitachi Ultravision. It has a great picture as far as I'm
concerned, but I think I want to step up from 51" to 60+.

Just my two cents.

Jack

Jack,

I think the risk of misrepresentation is very real, and I think this could
catch out both semi-sophisticated and first-time buyers.

As we know, consumers will use any excuse to put off a major purchase where
there is some near-term risk of obsolescence. The fact that these 1080p sets
are being marketed as "true HD" or "ultra HD" will be enough to nudge many
fence-sitters into a purchase. By the time many of them are able to figure
out that these sets can't handle 1080p sources, it will be too late to do
much about it.

And you can be pretty sure that big retailers will be using the "true HD"
hammer as if every shopper walking through the door is a nail in disguise.

Regards,

Doug

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I may have a slightly different take on this. I think it's fair to observe
that nearly all purchasers of "big ticket" TV's are willing to shell out for
what they perceive as sharp, colorful, life-like images. I don't think they
know diddly about the various display specs....just looking for the pretty
pictures. If this is at least mostly true, the most important issue for
1080P sets is do they produce the most bang for the buck. If folks in the
know can state positively that these sets are no better than last year's of
the year before, that's the word that needs to get out so that folks can
shell out a thousand or more less dollars and still get fabulous pictures.
