Hi, Just noticed a press release for a 2Wire STB that incorporates:
DSL
DISH HD/SD receiver
HD PVR
ATSC Tuners

Supposedly sold(?) by SBC. Anyone know if this is a real product?
This could be a real way to avoid the DISH pvr quagmire, if it is real!

Howard,

It's real and I know the 2wire guys have really been pushing their people
hard on it. Don't know how close they are to beta. It's just one piece of
SBC's Lightspeed project(IPTV).

Unfortunately there are some performance issues yet to be overcome on the
network side of things. This was supposed to rollout end of this year, but
I'd be surprised if we see it beyond a trial stage by middle of next year.
Microsoft and Alcatel are other key players in making this a go and both
have significant obstacles to overcome yet.

Another case of the marketing guys promising the moon while the engineering
guys get to figure out how to make it happen.

FWIW, SBC is de-emphasizing the DISH portion of that program and the DISH
folks are none too pleased. The promotion of DISH accounts through SBC fell
off recently by some 80+%. Most figure this is SBC letting them down
easy(80% is easy??) because once the Lightspeed program is running, SBC
really has no need for help from DBS to draw customers.
