Tom,

I was in BB and CC today and I swear the best picture I saw was on a 50"
Panasonic plasma. Don't know what they could have done to improve the
picture so it looked so good but one was sitting next to a Samsung plasma
and the Samsung looked terrible. In CC they had the same Panny 50" sitting
along side a Pioneer Plasma and a Sony plasma and again the clear winner was
the Panasonic. I saw a Samsung DLP 1080p and LCDs and I could not get over
the fact that the plasmas looked better, in my eye, than all the rest. The
Panny was about $1.2k cheaper than the Pioneer. I am not comparing anything
but the perceived PQ of the sets. I'm sure the brightness was set to max
but it sure looked impressive for about $4,300 and that's with an integrated
turner. CC did not have any info on connections, etc.

Hugh

The 1080P DLP sets are out, at least from Samsung, I got my 61" a couple of
weeks ago. To my eyes, 20/15 vision, Plasma sets have the worst picture. I
always see the pixel structure from the normal viewing distance and it is
very annoying. You need to get within a foot to see the pixels on the 1080P
DLP sets, and the 1080P LCOS sets you need to get a few inches away to see
the pixel structure.

Overall, I find the plasma the most satisfying to me. RPTVs Fresnel lens
screen (solid state RPTV primarily) do annoy me as I see the dulling effect
of them. I find the color and overall black levels more "exciting" than what
I generally see on plasma. I find the best FPTV other than CRT is the D-ILA
JVC, by far over other solid state FPTV, but the rear version has been a
disappointment to me. Maybe an improved version will be shown at CEDIA?

Just my opinion.

Hugh,
The first plasma I ever saw that I could really buy was a Panasonic. The
rest were awful at the time, and over $12,000 for a 42"! The Pioneer Pro
models are arguably 1) almost as good, 2) just as good, 3) better, take your
pick depending who you ask. A Pioneer Pro set up correctly should be a
difficult choice compared with a Panasonic. The home Pioneer is not as good
as the Pro, but still good. Beware of big store comparisons as they may
either have them not adjusted correctly or adjusted such as to give one
selling power over the other.

Joseph,
I was really surprised as I have never really liked plasma but a friend was
looking and it was very interesting. The prices sure are low.....relatively
speaking. I thought for sure the Pioneer would have been the best as it
looked excellent at CES. But as you said they are all fixed differently.
Someone off the street would definitely buy on price as there really is not
that much difference. I would have liked to have seen the Samsung 1080p
next to the plasmas with my programming choices of course.

The Pro prices have dropped, and there are some new Pioneer models to be
seen at CEDIA. In the long run plasma should be cheaper after factoring in
bulb replacement for DLP and LCD RPTV. I vaguely recall Rodolfo saying he
liked these best as well?

Joseph,
I was really surprised as I have never really liked plasma but a friend was
looking and it was very interesting.

Hugh

Can you tell us a little more about your experience so far with the Samsung
