7.1 audio

Without having to go read the specs...is 7.1 audio standard with dts or dd
'hd' versions? Better yet, is it planned for hd-dvd/blu-ray? After being out
for several years now, only a handful of movies have been made in anything
greater than 5.1. Glad I didn't spend the money on a 7 channel amp yet, but
I do have a 6 channel with a pair of rear surrounds connected to that 6th
channel...

There is nothing that is 7.1 on the market for DTS or Dolby. The only thing
that I am aware of that uses 7.1 discreet channels is SACD or DVD A. DTS ES
uses 6.1 as do some versions of Dolby EX but the back surrounds share the
same audio track. I'd say they were mono but that would be a misnomer. I
don't think this is a Blu-Ray issue so much as it is a software issue and to
some degree a hardware issue. There are receivers and amps etc offering up
to nine separate audio channels but these are hybrids and there is no
software currently that utilizes them.

I think you've confused DTS ES with Dolby Digital EX. None of the Harry
Potter films to my knowledge have a DTS soundtrack. The first I believe is
5.1 Dolby. The second is Dolby EX. EX however is not discreet the two
extra rear channels are derived from a matrix. The sixth channel of DTS ES
is discreet. If you have two back channel surrounds as I do the audio is
duplicated in both speakers. If you want a complete list of discs with a
DTS soundtrack go to www.dts.com click on consumer, then click on home
theater, then click on DVD title search., select United States as the
country and then click submit and you will get the entire list of DVD's with
both 5.1, and 6.1 DTS soundtracks.

My dumb question of the day. What does "region" have to do with DVD's?
I've read this a million times and just finally decided to ask what it is
about.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

It's to make you spend more money. Really it's more of a control thing. If
I'm not mistaken North America is region 1. Europe, and Asia also have
their own regional codes. This is to keep someone from purchasing a disc of
a new release in one country and viewing, copying it, before it is released
in their own country. Some of it may have to do with censorship as well. A
specific version of a film in a particular market. Really I think it all
comes down to control.
And believe me Hugh, there really is no such thing as a stupid question.
All of us from time to time need a refresh.

My dumb question of the day. What does "region" have to do with DVD's?
I've read this a million times and just finally decided to ask what it is
about.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Dvd players and movies are both coded with a geographic region (the US and
Canada are in 'Region 1'). If you buy a dvd player that is 'region 1' then
you can only play Region 1 titles. The idea is to prevent pirated DVDs made
in China from being usable elsewhere in the world. It doesn't prevent piracy
as much as it slows it down a bit.

There are lots of 'region free' players for those who want movies made in
other parts of the world, but no major manufacturer makes them.

In the PC world, you can change the region of your dvd-rom drive, but you
can only do it 5 times before you're locked into that last region. There are
also hacks to make dvd-rom drives region free (so you can watch dvds from
other regions on your computer), and to reset the counter.

Thanks Anthony and Jason, that is what I thought but I couldn't understand
why people in this country would be concerned over what region the DVD
player could use. I guess a number of people are importing DVD's.

First I have ever heard of that... HD Audio is limited to 5 channels
plus one sub. There have been variations on the center and sub channels
for hieght or sides but either way 6 is all you have to work with.

Richard check the DTS website and you will find that DTS is in fact 6.1
discreet channels of audio. There is a matrix used on DTS 5.1 but not ES.
As far as HD Audio is concerned I can't say for certain and will take your
word on it as I have never used it. I do know that DVD A has 7.1 inputs but
whether they are discreet or a matrix I couldn't say.

DVD Audio has 8 channels for output? Which player? Which DVD Audio disc?
Sure that is not an HT matrixed 7.1 thing?

The Yamaha CDX1 player. The Marrantz receiver I own has 7.1 analog inputs
for DVD A. The Denon 4802 also has 7.1 analog inputs I believe for the same
purpose.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Richard,

I stand corrected before you and the entire board. You are correct on HD
Audio as you usually are about everything else. I just went to a site to
look at the back of the Yamaha player which is a CX1 not CDX1 as I stated
earlier. My apologies to anyone I misinformed in the process. Now that I
just finished my large helping of crow, I have a question, how is the audio
on DVD A versus SACD? I have a compatible receiver I believe and the player
obviously, is it worth the time to hook it up and invest in a few discs if
they are in fact still available?

DVD Audio has 8 channels for output? Which player? Which DVD Audio disc?
Sure that is not an HT matrixed 7.1 thing?

Anthony,

IMO, on a good system both SACD and DVD-A (depending on the recording) is as
close as you can get to the warmth of Vinyl without the surface noise of
dragging around a stylus.

2 channels versus 5.1 is just a matter of taste.

IMO, multi-channel sounds more like a live concert though purists seem to
always favor 2 channel.

Larry pretty much said it all.

> IMO, multi-channel sounds more like a live concert though purists seem to
> always favor 2 channel.

2 reasons...

Two channels of audiophile sonics is very expensive; take that times 3
more channels.

The vast majority of material was originally stereo so this is no
different than OAR for video; Original presentation is typically stereo.

There are some original multichannels though and they are tempting but
back to the first line over expense and response...

The reason the 7.1 analog inputs are there I suppose is for those DVD
players where you are going to use the D/A convertors instead of the
ones on the receiver for movies only since HD audio does not support that.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I would have to say that original presentation is never stereo, i.e. two
channel. When seated before an orchestra the sound comes from all around
the listener and not just from the left and right.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I knew I wasn't crazy. I went back and looked in the owners manual of my
Marantz receiver last night and there is a separate 7.1 channel input that
it says is for the hook up of SACD or DVD A with either a 5.1 or 7.1 output.
Having never used either format, I thought that one of the two was 7.1. It
never mentions DVD. Perhaps they were anticipating a 7.1 format of some
kind other than DVD.

Larry pretty much said it all.

You are right on both counts, but I note that Bob Fine at Mercury preferred
3 channels, and the recent Mercury 3 Channel SACD's are really amazing, as
are some of the RCA releases. It seems as tho SACD has pretty well won the
battle, but I may be wrong on that score.
