Well I took the plunge with the Toshiba HD-A1 connected to a Sony 60" Grand
WEGA SXRD. I bit early on the promised up-conversion for existing DVDs.

Now that I have the unit set-up I can report from my initial experience that
the up-conversion of existing DVD's via HDMI input is crap at best. There
is no up-conversion available via the component output. There are lots of
artifacts. My DVD collection looks better from my older Mitsubishi DVD
player using the up-conversion feature of my Denon AVR-4306 into the
component input of the Sony.

I am going to stop in to Best Buy tomorrow and pick up a couple of HD
titles. They were not available when I picked up the player.

Up until now, my HDMI source for the WEGA has been my DISH 811 HD receiver.
I have not had any problems.

I am going to take the HD-1A to a friend's house to see the results there.
Will not quite be apples to apples comparison however. He has front
projection using the Faroudja DILA 1080PHD. I also have to check as I
believe that the Video Processor for his setup only has DVI inputs. We may
need to come up with an HDMI to DVI adapter to do the test. I wouldn't
doubt that when I call to set this up, he may already have the Toshiba unit
himself. Orthopedic surgeons have a higher A/V budget than I do.

Dave.

Dave,

There is already a huge thread on AVS (over 1100 posts) for the HD-A1. Mixed
results, but many claim great upconverting capability. Some are comparing
it favorably to upconverting players which use the Jaroudja chip contained
in your Denon. The thread begins at the following:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/printthr ... &p=7490622

Those already using the new disks also report mixed results versus broadcast
signals and regular DVDs. Obviously those using a 720P set should not expect
the same increased resolution as you would get with the SXRD. Plus, those
with smaller screens will have less obvious improvements.

One thought is that the SXRD is very sensitive to proper setup on your
specific input. If you have your HDMI input on Pro, warm and use Avia or
DVE for adjusting everything (including advanced options) it can make a huge
difference versus something like the vivid setting which definitely is
terrible for artifacts.

Regards,
Richard
