Hitachi 57F59A

DTV tuner outputs 480I only and is converted to 1080I - NO QAM

K... so it meets FCC requirements at a minimum cost and many don't need
it anyway.

An interesting solution to try and control retail pricing...

This one really baffles me.

First, a digital off-air tuner is only required, IIRC, when an analog
off-air tuner is provided, which is apparently not the case here.

Second, how much can this 480i-only tuner be saving over a HD output? I
don't have access to any chip pricing, but I bet it can't be more than $10
per set.

Third, it appears the only real reason for this tuner is to give the user
PIP capability; in fact, PIP REQUIRES that one source be the TV's (digital)
tuner. So, in other words, if you have cable or satellite and want PIP,
you have to have an antenna, also.

Hitachi has always been my TV of choice, but I'm starting to wonder about
them.
