I can't recall seeing anyone on the list posting from that area; does
anyone know of a tipster in that area?

I think there was at least one. When Indonesia took a hit from the tsunami
there was a lot of interest by some on this board to donate money to the
victims. Katrina was in our back yard. I would be willing to make a
donation to the victims of Katrina if I knew the money was actually going to
reach those who need it. If there is someone who knows of such a charity
please speak up. If there are enough interested, perhaps we could make a
joint contribution on behalf of HDTV magazine.

I would be happy to know of an organization that allowed you to direct
your contributions to the Katrina area as well, as I believe the Red

While I am hardly a defender of existing institutions I would worry that
picking a new one simply because it is a new name to us might be choosing
the devil we don't know instead of the devil we do know. What
organization(s) do we know that is/are capable of mounting the challenge of
such a wide-spread catastrophe? Perhaps if we jot down some candidates that
can meet the challenge and who can navigate through the red tape we could
choose (vote) for one or more from that list and support it/them either
individually or collectively.

Personally, I think it's a little too early for financial contributions.
The state and national government's handling of this issue is
horrendous. I'm sure you guys have been watching the news as much as I
am, and I have the added insight of hearing first and second hand
accounts of the chaos that New Orleans is turning into. FEMA says they
are spending 500 million a day - meanwhile people are still waiting on
roofs and trapped in attics, while wading through disease-infested water
with dead bodies floating by. There's absolutely no excuse for not
having our National Guard troops there in substantially larger numbers,
as well as helicopters by the hundreds to get these people out. I will
step off my soap box before I even talk about the budget for levee
improvement being gutted year after year, but my point is that *today*
they don't need money - they need state and federal officials to step up
to the plate and do their jobs. I will donate substantially when a
relief organization begins to show signs of actually accomplishing
something.

Joseph - the kind of grass roots response that your people are involved
in is what we really need. I'd like to see cities across the country
begin to form some kind of disaster preparedness squad, ready to
mobilize at the citizen level when the need arises. It shouldn't be
necessary, since we have the National Guard, but since citizens can't
control the federalization of the Guard, we are subject to political
whim as to whether they will be in our country or another. I'm hoping to
take a trip down there this weekend (it's about 6 hours away) and
brainstorming with friends as to how to make it happen.

Over the years I have met numerous people who lived and worked in NO and all
of them have said that everyone knew it was a catastrophe waiting to happen.
This should not be a surprise to anyone but of course you can't have the
equipment and manpower sitting outside the bowl for decades waiting for what
will happen someday. Unfortunately this is a very poor State and no
politician would urge spending to get the levees up to Category 5 status.
A real coincidence that all these trucks are now arriving at the same time
as the president.

I'm hoping to
take a trip down there this weekend (it's about 6 hours away) and
brainstorming with friends as to how to make it happen.

picking a new one simply because it is a new name to us might be
choosing
the devil we don't know instead of the devil we do know. What

I think there was at least one. When Indonesia took a hit from the
tsunami
there was a lot of interest by some on this board to donate money to the
victims. Katrina was in our back yard. I would be willing to make a
donation to the victims of Katrina if I knew the money was actually
going

I don't understand why we are discussing Hurrican relief on the tips list.
Every individual member has had an opportunity since day one to contribute
to one of the nationally recognized charities that are doing first response
work. Each one of us may choose to keep contributing until we believe we are
all tapped out.

I am not being insensitive or uncompassionate, I have friends down there.
But this issue has nothing to do with the purpose of this list. Already
people have begun to insert political comments and, from prior experience,
that always leads to problems here.

Jack,

Something as traumatic as this brings feelings out among all of us, and
TIPSTERS are no exception. Considering that we are such a tight knit family,
it is expected that we would share are grief with one another while looking
for ways to help those that are suffering. As has been discussed, special
interest is in knowing if anyone among us is in the affected area, and if
so, how can we help. While you are absolutely correct, this is not a
political, nor a relief site, in times of tragedy, normal rules suspend
while we grieve and look for ways to help those that need our help.

My point was missed entirely.

I have no problem at all with people expressing compassion even on the tips
list. We would we be inhuman not to say something. I am objecting to
individuals who were beginning to make political comments. They have no
place here as we have seen in the past. I don't happen to believe that "the
tips list" is a community that makes collective gifts in "our name". We all
are challenged to respond to this disaster as individuals and as members of
faith and other communities. I really don't wish to discuss it any further.
Let's move on.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Jack, I have asked you as politely as I can off this list yesterday not to
take it upon yourself to set policy for this forum. That is the
responsibility of Shane and myself as founders and owners of this FREE
service. It seems that you insist, and with complete disregard for my views
expressed yesterday, upon placing your politics of "no politics" ahead of
all other politics, and I reject that out of hand. If this forum is no
longer of interest to you may I suggest that there are far more restrictive
forums to be found that adhere to a limited set of ideas tightly managed by
a set of rules as dictated by that forum's most restrictive members. Free
thinking must have space for political dialog. Dictatorial thinking
requires no such space. The later produces little, creatively speaking. I
am in favor of a creative outcome to all things and my politics is to favor
open, though certainly not abusive, dialog to achieve it.

Now, as a practical matter I don't differ with your view. I wish I did. I
think that people can shoot their mouth off without engaging their brain. I
found that true throughout the entire HDTV developmental process and the
politics about it were absolutely horrendous, and not much better to this
day. So, I don't want to have us fall into a morass of misinformation due to
some bias coming from one member or another. So, as I said to you
yesterday, there is a compromise to my position that puts some restraints on
endlessly open and headless debates. I said, you will recall, that I would
open the list up to any dialog or expression for two days following any
benchmark event, such as 9/11 and this horrendous hurricane. We can thank
whatever we think is responsible that so few of these tragedies occur in one
year. But they do occur. You seem to not like this approach and so continue
here with your attempts at restricting what are in many cases very deep
unleashed emotions and thoughts. Maybe some are just argumentative and bias
just to be argumentative and bias, but for two days I can tolerate even
that. In two days we will all grow weary of the uneducated politi-guessing
and get ready to move on with the subject we seem to love most.

Finally, since this is such a horrendous event and has many watershed
likelihoods attached to it that can affect the outcome of the HDTV
transition, I do think that holding to the two day rule is also short
sighted. But carrying on the dialog here is impractical, so let me point you
to the new forum and ask you to set up a section call "HURRICANE."

"Ah," you say, "There is no one over there on that forum yet and the reason
we come and spout off here is because the Tips has a thousand readers. We
can get our points across to a bigger audience." I hope those who might
have that idea come to realize the cost to the owners of this list and what
it took to assemble this group. No one who seeks to abuse this list for any
reason what-so-ever can prove themselves ever to be a friend of mine.
