These articles (indicating that most HDTV owners are not getting HD) are
based on a BADLY FLAWED study paid for by Scientific Atlanta. To quote
a little from the article:

> cable subscribers who say they're getting HDTV service from their
> cable operators - which is impossible, since HDTV service comes only

> satellite TV subscribers, that means getting an HD receiver
> set-top-box or CableCARD, which slides into some newer HDTV models.

This study totally ignores the fact that most HDTVs can receive real HD
from cable via the QAM tuner - without a CableCARD. Most cable systems
are sending out local and several other HD channels (such as INHD,
TNTHD, Discovery HD) "in the clear" - No CableCARD or STB required.
Could it be that the intent of this study be to sell more HD STBs?

Likely, I have missed something. How do we process the HDTV QAM signal from
cable if we have no digital decoder box or cable card...regardless of
whether those signals are encrypted or left in the clear? Where is this QAM
demodulator if not in the STB or cable card? _Dale

Dale,

It's in the set itself. Any set with a CableCARD has a QAM tuner
(external to the card). The CableCARD is just for decrypting - not
demodulating. I've set up several sets with QAM tuners (and no
CableCARD).

The Best Buy link you have is for a STB with ATSC and QAM tuners (with
no CableCARD).

The Wikipedia link is great. Goes into a lot of technical detail
discussing the modulation technique - but does not tie QAM to CableCARD.
