I mentioned that I would let the board know the outcome on this very
inexpensive 51" set. I had it calibrated last night. It is quite painful
for me to say this, but after calibration the Aspect is really giving my
2002 Mits Diamond a run for it's money. Corner to corner focus is just as
sharp. There was less edge enhancement circuitry to defeat on the Aspect.
Saturation and hue were par, and the Aspect is substantially brighter, 35
foot candles versus nine on the Mits. Further the Aspect has a DVI hddcp
input which allowed me to go HDMI out of the 8300 dvr to DVI in on the
Aspect and the image is substantially sharper that the component out on the
same dvr as a result. My investment, 1200 for the set with four year
warranty including tax, and 300 for calibration. Incredible picture and
major bang for the buck. The set now sells for 1139 on line at circuit city
and the 65" version is now 1,899.00 it was 1200.00 during Labor day.

Jack,

The 51" is the 51M200, and the 65" is the 65M200. On the Circuit City
website search engine you will see only the 51" model if you type in Aspect.
You have to type Aspect 65" in the engine to see that model. According to
the calibrator I used, it has all the controls you would find in a regular
Hitachi. In fact in says Hitachi on the back of the set. If you need any
other info let me know.

Anthony,

Why the big difference in peak light output -- 9 on the Mits versus 35 on
the Hitachi? That's a significant relative difference.

Also, I assume that you mean footlamberts, and if so, I would expect that a
light reading of 35 means there's a strong likelihood that you're
overdriving the CRTs in your Hitachi at that level, particularly if the
measurements on both sets was done with the same instrument.

I would expect that the Hitachi picture should be just as good as the Mits
Diamond, once both have been calibrated. The fact that the Hitachi is so
much brighter than the Mits, probably goes a long way toward explaining why
it appears to be better.

Of course, it's possible that the Mits peak light output is set too low, but
based on the numbers the Hitachi seems the more likely candidate, at least
considering this from a distance.

Regards,

Doug

The person who did my calibration on both of these sets can answer this
better than I can, so I fowarded this post on to him. When he replies I
will post his answer on the board.
