No problem Doug. I understood exactly what you were saying and certainly
did not take it as questioning his competence. I will send you his reply as
soon as I receive it, which will probably be tomorrow given his schedule.

Anthony,
I was actually going to try to send my note on your calibration privately,
but couldn't immediately locate your eMail address. Then I had Internet
connection problems on my home network and when I came back in a rush I
accidentally sent out the entire contents of my Drafts folders -- all
messages I wasn't planning on sending, including the one to you about the
light levels.
Gak!
I also wanted to clarify that I wasn't questioning the competence of the
calibrator, but I was curious and wanted to know if there was some reason
for this disparity in light levels in the event I come across some of these
Hitachi sets in the months ahead. It just seems strange.
So, if you prefer, you can just send your calibrator's reply directly to me
rather than posting publicly, or if you want you can just put me in touch
with him.
Sorry about the "escaped" post...
Regards,
Doug

The only option I have with respect to 1080i or 540P is in the virtual HD
mode where the unit senses a 408i input and then up converts to either of
those two settings depending upon what you have selected. I will double
check the owners manual when I get home and let you know. It does seem
strange to me that it would display a 720p signal native which is why I put
this up. There is a noticeable difference in the picture on ESPN though
when I eliminate the 720p output from the cable box and have it set to only
output 1080i.

Anthony,
I believe that the Hitachi displays 720p signals as 1080i or 540p, depending
on what you select in one of the menus. At least, this is what previous
Hitachi models have done...the newer models may be forcing it to 1080i.
There are virtually no CRT RPTVs that can display 720p. Panasonic built a
couple of 480i/480p/720p/1080i-capable models around 2000, and I don't think
any of the mainstream manufacturers have done that since then.
In fact, my understanding is that the only reason Panasonic briefly flirted
with 720p displays was as a way of promoting the 720p format in the early
days of HDTV, in order to boost sales of its professional 720p video
cameras.

Doug

I am going HDMI out from my 8300 DVR Cable box to the DVI in on the Hitachi.
I have the cable box set to output 1080I, 720P, and 480i. When I switch to
ESPN HD, the picture goes to snow then comes back up and the Hitachi then
says 720P display. When I then switch to say Discovery HD for example, the
picture goes back to snow then comes back up and the Hitachi says 1080I
display. So the impression I'm getting is that this monitor is displaying
both 1080i and 720P native, without up or down conversion. I tried the same
thing on the Mits and it only displays black when fed a 720P signal direct.
Perhaps I'm behind the curve but I didn't think there were any displays out
there that would display both 1080I and 720P native without up or down
conversion.
