Hi, I noticed a number of probable center channel audio drop-outs during
SB41 this eve.

Anyone else notice this or was it local to South Bend?

Here is Southern California (Cox), we had video pixelation, audio and
video stuttering a few times early in the game. The ony audio
problems I noticed was during the audio/video stuttering.

I noticed 'audio drop-outs', that is volume dropping way down, in
Dallas. I was watching via my new DirecTV HR20 the local CBS Digital
channel (11-1) with audio via optical to my HK 5.1 system.. Not sure if
it was the HR20, Channel 11 or CBS. Earlier I had (on NBC channel) an
experience where the voice track died but the background track (music,
etc) was ok... channel up; channel down fixed it (I had experienced this
on NBC years ago just after getting my HDTV except the channel up/down
didn't fix it when it occurred).

Hi Howard...

There were instances during network commercial breaks when the Dolby Digital
collapsed to ProLogic during a spot and then returned to DD at the end.

Obviously the Center channel would have disappeared during a ProLogic event.

Other than that, no network audio or video problems OTA here in Miami.
Switching noises when the affiliate went to their local break. They need a
quiet switch.

Don,

Please clarify your interesting findings.

If the 5.1 DD was actually replaced by a 2.0 L/R DD on the adds, which
should have been decoded as prologic by the audio system, would mean that
the center channel disappearing as discrete in DD would have been replaced
by a pro-logic steered/matrixed center channel created by the prologic
algorithm of L+R, but not dropped 100% out of the audio image.

Therefore I see no reason for disappearing completely, but for a change in
its performance from discrete to matrixed, that is assuming that the audio
system in question automatically adjusts to the 5.1 to 2.0 DD drop and
performs matrix surround out of that, and could mean that some people not
having that automatic set up would have lost the center channel entirely,
which could explain why the experiences were different.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
