Hi Phil...

What Channel 6 in Orlando is doing is frowned on by most broadcast
engineering staffs.

You don't see ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, WB doing "stretch" to their 480
material. The networks leave that option to the individual viewer.

What WKMG is doing is an "individual station" thing.

It may be an weak attempt by them to "appear" to be transmitting
their local news product in HD, when they are not. It may be management
trying to "trick" the uninformed viewer.

The Fox station in Miami was in "stretch" mode for a long time, and
they recently went back to the mode favored by most stations
in the country... i.e. transmit 4:3 material unmodified.

The end of analog does not mean the end of 4:3 material.
Hopefully the 4:3 in 4:3 out mentality will prevail.

@ NBC 6, WTVJ, Miami

Hi All,

The other day channel 6 WKMG out of Orlando Florida started to transmit wide
screen digital during their news broadcast. I would like to know if anyone
has seen the wide screen broadcast because it looks like all they did is
stretch the picture. Is this the way 480I is going to look like when they
turn off the other TV frequencies?

Later
Phil

Our local NBC station, WNDU appears to be up-converting most 4:3
material. Their converter is quite good; I certainly prefer this to
burn-in bars.

Howard in South Bend, where the spring game may be a sell-out!
