While I haven't seen much detail about the new Sony Qualia product, they
are supposedly going to offer a 4k, as in resolution - 4096x2048 (I
believe), projector for $88k that utilizes the same technology, SXRD, as
the other Qualia projector which sells for $30k that Sony demonstrated for
me in Vegas in their video room. Very impressive, especially coupled with
the Blu-Ray player that was showing the HD recorded trailer from Spiderman
2. The product is supposedly being directed toward the commercial
market. Obviously, Sony has no idea how much money some of you guys have. <G>

Tom,

This subject was covered two days ago, I mentioned this model at the tips with the email below, the
model is on page 44 of the 2005 report:

Anthony,

Check page 36 on the 2005 report to see the specs of the projector mentioned by Alan (JVC) in
addition to other two from JVC, the HD-4K 4096x2160, and the DLA QX-1 2048x1536 accepting 1080p.

Alan is right regarding the lower contrast ratio, the HD-2K is half of the one you mention, but for
home use that would be plenty enough (2000:1 CR).

Check also the Sony version of 4K SXRD (SRX-R110 $80K + $15K for lens), page 44 of the report,
resolution of 4096x2160, 3000:1 CR, expected in theaters in 2005, for 40 feet wide screens, suitable
for 4 1920x1080 images projecting together.

Sony also has the SRX-R105 for $60K, half of the lumens of the 4K and is for up to 25 feet screens.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

When you buy something in that category figure an easy $5K-20K external
scaler.

Yes, it is native nothing and requires a scaler.

Here's what they told me when I asked Runco:

At the very least you will be able to acquire a second input card upon
the projector.
Although I suspect that the Processor/Controller being designed for the
SC-1 will be able to accept all video formats w/in the Home Theater
Environment.
Our processing is "way beyond" simply 'doubling'...
Evidence of this, using a DVD player w/ component output (480i) going
through our processing will yield a superior picture that the
progressive (480p) output offered by most to all DVD players...
- bob grubbs
* we should have more details of the SC-1 right around the C.E.D.I.A.
annual event (early September).

So they dodged it.

Not sure what that means.

As for the rest, yes Runco provides their scaler and of course per Runco
it is the best. That is a pretty tall statement but I doubt you would be
unhappy with it's performance unless you want to cut hairs!

It is not uncommon for 20K+ projectors to not come with scaling. Nearly
all providing or purchasing such a system know that the scaler is half
of the video display system and more often than not already have one
they prefer.
