I saw the Samsung Blu-Ray player at Best Buy the other day and was wondering
if anyone has picked one up to try. Since I had nothing to compare it with
I could not tell how it was performing. Since we are on the cutting edge
of technology I figured someone already has one.

What was Best Buy's price? I haven't had the chance to even go and
try to see a Blu-Ray player since the release on Tuesday.

I stopped by the local Best Buy / Magnolia Home Theater. The first
demo setup right inside the door was a 50" Samsung plasma playing a
blu-ray movie. I sat down and watched for a few minutes.

My immediate thought was that this is interlaced video. I tracked
down the kid working the store and he eventually confirmed that the TV
would only accept 1080i. Unfortunately it took about 10 mintues to
get him to admit that we weren't actually watching 1080p. He seemed
stuck on the fact that Toshiba and Samsung assured him that all HD-DVD
or Blu-Ray is 1080p.

He would not allow me to touch the remote for the TV or Blu-Ray
player. I politely thaked him and told him I would not spend $1200
for a Blu-Ray player if I couldn't at least touch the remote and see
how the system worked.

Long story short, I went in to see the price and walked out frustrated
by the lack of knowlege of the salesman.

Jeff,

That's a shame the ignorant salesman treated you like that!

$1200,,,,,,,,,,,, I thought they were $999 like Crutchfield and Amazon are
advertising?

You mean they are marking them up because they have the first ones out?

That's crazy because we all know they will go for $500 in six months when
Gen 2 come out.

hehehe I am with you Bill. I am not really that surprised that he
was ignorant. The $1200 price tag was a bit silly. I will wait a
little while and let the REALLY early adopters buy the first units and
see how they work in real life.

I will definitely buy a Blu-Ray player but I might wait for a better
price point. I would also like more than 1 choice of hardware
manufacturers.

Hey Fellas,

We need Rodolfo to answer this one.......when the new 1.3 HDMI spec
connector come out, how will that improve the picture and is this another
thing we should wait for in a Blu Ray player?

I'm sure everyone knows that the Sony unit will NOT plays CD's like the
Sammy unit will.

The Sammy BD player is chock full of imaging problems.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=689481

and

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... ge=4&pp=30

Unless they fix it I am not spending $1000. That burns me more than
anything but Samsung seems to be notorious for putting poorly performing
product out there and fixing it in the field. This also will not bode
well for BDs introduction...

Not that Toshiba can walk proudly but at least with component analog we
have an alternative that works right and man is it killer. D Theater on
disc!

Not clear on analog capability for Bluray, seem to recall 1080I max...
Rodolfo? :)

well for BDs introduction...

Not that Toshiba can walk proudly but at least with component analog we
have an alternative that works right and man is it killer. D Theater on
disc!

Not clear on analog capability for Bluray, seem to recall 1080I max...

The Sammy BD player is chock full of imaging problems.

and

Unless they fix it I am not spending $1000. That burns me more than anything
but Samsung seems to be notorious for putting poorly performing product out
there and fixing it in the field. This also will not bode well for BDs
introduction...

Hopefully this is all the fault of Samsung.....as usual.....and not the
technology itself. Maybe the Sony model will do better.

Richard,

Your question "Not clear on analog capability for Bluray, seem to recall 1080I max...
Rodolfo?"

No 1080p claims were officially announced by either player/format over analog component connections.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

If I recall correctly, both formats allow for/support 1080p. HD DVD
discs are even labeled as such (at least the ones I've seen). But so
far, I don't think there is a player that supports 1080p. I know the
Toshiba's are both limited to 1080i. I don't know about the Samsung.

Nevermind, just re-read your post and it referred to analog connections
