I was speaking with someone over the weekend who said they read an article
that stated that neither format would be backwards compatible with existing
DVDs due to the length of lasers currently used versus the length of the new
lasers. Perhaps everyone else was aware of this but I was not. Anyone know
if this is true?

Anthony, any backwards compatibility would require they put both lasers in
there - blue for hddvd/bluray, red for dvd/cd. Both have talked about it,
and many believe it will happen. So it's technically true that the new
format is not compatible with the old, but red lasers are so cheap, it
should only be a small increase in cost to accommodate the old technology in
a new player.

Things change but back in January we were all told that would be backward
compatible......that's both formats. Can you imagine forcing people to have
two DVD players. Maybe they won't but I would really doubt it.
