Blu-Ray Hookup

Well, I pre-ordered the new Panasonic (BD-10A) player this week. Now I
need to know how to hook it up when it gets here. My 65" CRT Mitsubishi
has a single DTV input and that goes to my Dish DVR. As I see it, my
options are:

1. Have my Parasound preamp upgraded to HDTV switching (unknown cost,
but I emailed to find out).
2. Buy a new preamp.I don't want to spend that much right now and I
would rather wait for HDMI 1.3 and HD surround anyway.
3. Use a scaler to do the switching.
4. Find an outboard HD-capable component switch.

All suggestions and comments welcome.

I would buy an outboard hd component switch, like the Inday RGB4X-R. I
have one that I used for about a month but has been sitting here for
months in the box. I paid $149 and would sell it for $75, including
shipping, if you're interested.

Specs are at http://www.inday.com/rgb4x/rgb4x.htm

It has a remote that you can take the signal and program a universal
remote - so whenever you switch audio sources, it would send the signal
to switch video sources, too.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Walt,

You did not say which "type" of DTV component connection your TV has, YPbPr
might be the actual case of your TV (judging by the Dish DVR), but you need
to know that the offer is for a component YPbPr analog switcher, not RGBHV
component BNC.

The reason I say that is because some old Mitsubishi TVs had a 5-BNC RGBHV
DTV component input, which expected the H and V sync signals coming
separately, as opposed to YPbPr 3 RCA cables. They are both considered
component analog but handle H and V differently.

Although transcoder adaptors are possible, it might be better to avoid that,
for the extra cost and risk of image degradation.

It would be useful if you mention the model number of your TV so we can help
you with a safe fit for that particular TV.

You should also be aware that if your TV has only component analog inputs it
would be waste of time and money to pursue the purchase of any Hi-Def DVD
player thinking about the 1080p outputs. Only 1080i would be out, only
1080i would be received by the TV; and if the ICT Token is eventually used
on the discs you will view those HD movies at much lower resolution.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

You're right, my Mits has a single analog component input for HD, in
addition to 2 component ins that do 480p..Thus the need for switching
now that I am adding a second HD source. The model number of my set is
WS65711. I am aware I will be limited to 1080i for now. I'm comfortable
taking my chances until I decide to replace the Mits. Thanks for looking
out for me.

I agree Richard. I just added the LG Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player to my
system. I love it.

The side affect is that now I am upgrading everything else to fully
appreciate the differences. I just added a new receiver with support
for the Dolby and DTS HD audio codecs. A new monitor is next.

Why can't I pick an inexpensive hobby? LOL

That's what I'm afraid of . . . I've already gotten a little soured on
DVD thanks to OTA and DSS HD. I hope I can beat back that little voice
that I'm sure will soon be whispering "I wonder how it would look in 1080P?"

Meanwhile, any word on DVE or AVIA or something similar for Blu-Ray? All
I've seen is the Silicon Optix HQV, but I don't know anything about it.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Walt,

As I thought, your set is a 2003 model that has RGBHV in 5 connections, but
you can ignore the H+V and use the other 3 for YPbPr component. You have to
set the menu to detect such input though. Your set has also a VGA input put
is not for HD, and the other two component inputs are as you said for non-HD
signals.

Jason's box should be all you need. I suggest to try it in line and out to
detect any possible image degradation with its internal circuitry because is
an electronic device, not a manual switcher, although with the bandwidth
declared on the specs it should work fine.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

You're right, my Mits has a single analog component input for HD, in
addition to 2 component ins that do 480p..Thus the need for switching
now that I am adding a second HD source. The model number of my set is
WS65711. I am aware I will be limited to 1080i for now. I'm comfortable
taking my chances until I decide to replace the Mits. Thanks for looking
out for me.

How far are you from that 65" display... 1080p might be useless...

I have not a heard a word about a blu-ray calibration DVD. Joe Kane has
stated in the past that DVE on blu-ray is not in the works...

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Joe Kane Productions is now working on the BD version of 'Digital Video
Essentials.' Ovation Multimedia is determined to complete NTSC, PAL, HD
DVD and BD versions of Avia II. ISF/Monster/Microsoft are working on a
hi def version of their 'HDTV Calibration Wizard,' this time with a
professional calibration test pattern section and ambient light level
pattern. Joel Silver did not mention format details when we last spoke
about this project.

The HQV discs in both HD formats are not calibration programs. Just as
the original SD program, it's a scaler/deinterlacer/processor torture
test and performance evaluation disc. The HD versions have unique and
expanded tutorial features for evaluating HD displays, DVD players and
outboard signal processors.

Two older programs offer 1080p calibration software. DisplayMate
Multimedia Edition is a CD ROM program that can be scaled to whatever
your computer's graphics card is capable of, and output signal type is
also up to your computer's features. 'DVE Professional' is a DVD
program in Windows Media Video 9 HD format. It contains test materials
in 720p and 1080p for Media Center Edition and XP computers having
sufficient graphics horsepower.

That is some of the best news I have heard as a performance enthusiast,
calibrator and reviewer. While one can burn images to blu-ray that is
not the same thing as a calibration program of test material that has
been verified and checked for accuracy. I prefer to use test materials
that are commercially available to our readers so we are all on the same
page with the same ability to check things!

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Hi Alan,

Where did you hear that? I talked with the publisher recently and they
indicated that there was no news on a Blu-ray version as of yet.

Thanks,

Shane Sturgeon

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane,

It was either Dave Abrams of JKP, or Joe himself. They are a bit tight
lipped at times about projects they are working on. DVD Int'l may not
actually know yet.

Joe was also very involved in the design of Samsung's second generation
BD player recently released. I got one as soon as I learned that he was
significantly involved in the re-working of it. I'm very pleased with it.

Samsung has also completed the design of Joe's 1080p single-chip DLP
projector and he is pleased with the results. He has announced on the
JKP web site that he will be demonstrating it at a couple of future
trade shows. The announcement is at the bottom of his home page:
http://www.videoessentials.com/index.php . An important factor that
remains is for Samsung to get serious about marketing this promising
project effectively for a change. One of Samsung's goals was for it to
be offered at a reasonable price, to compete with Sony's 1080p SXRD design.

Best regards,
Alan

From one extreme to another for Samsung eh? That first player was a
videophile 1080p24 performance joke!

Where is my performance technology drool cup?

LOL

Now I need to find another $5k...

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till
afterwards. Proverbs 29:11

Truth indeed!

Samsung's original BD player was the first to market. Often times,
"Haste makes waste." I think Benjamin Franklin wrote that one.

Performance technology drool cup? A fellow traveler!

Best regards,
Alan
