Hugh,
I purchased the Sony.
I did not have the time yet to do a technical review of the unit other than
testing and comparing the output formats, I just played with it in normal
use and it is very nice, especially when I play discs in 1080p 24fps direct
to the scaler/projector, I needed that quality for a large 2.35:1 Cinerama
screen, no video processing compromises.
I did not buy (and did not want to) the Samsung so I could not tell how they
compare, but Samsung's current unit had so many negative remarks and reviews
that I do not find value in the comparison, not today, not even with the
firmware upgrade.
I do not buy any equipment to test and return like many people (AVS for
example) because down the line it affects the market price to all if
everyone would do that, but more importantly, it is unethical. I do not
accept freebies from manufacturers either, to maintain my neutrality in my
opinion and my writing. So my comparisons are limited to the equipment I
choose to keep as duplicated services, I have some of that but it is not
cost affective for the sake of comparisons, I need to have an added value,
like when I bought two Pioneer laserdisc players (703 and 704) because the
704 offered me AC-3 (Dolby Digital now) output, if anyone can remember that.
I cannot disclose information about new products yet due to embargoed press
releases that prohibit me to do so, but I can advance to you that Samsung is
coming with a new unit in a few months with HDMI 1.3, however, I would not
recommend buying it until a good review is done (minimum at the level of
Greg Rogers at WSR), I do not trust Samsung after their flop, no matter who
is on the driver seat of that division now. The same with Pioneer Elite or
any other out there, I am cautious.
I trusted Sony because they represent the blu-ray format father figure, and
after Samsung's failure they were in a straight jacket to make the Blu-ray
format clean its act and show what is made off, and I told that to Pioneer
as well at the last HDTV conference, I told them "do not do the same mistake
of Samsung you cannot afford that mistake". Sony had no choice, it had to
be as perfect as possible. So I put my bet on it, it worked well for me so
far, but time and viewing will provide me with a more complete experience on
the player and the movies, anything could happen in early adoption, and you
know it well Hugh.
Best Regards,
Rodolfo La Maestra

Rodolfo,
I am curious as to which Blu-Ray player you purchased and how it compares to
the Samsung model which had problems.
Regards,
Hugh
