I flipped over to the CBS game (Bal vs. TB) earlier today to be greeted
by the worst SD picture I've ever seen. Is this the "standard" CBS will
be following this season? Are we headed backwards? I checked during
halftime to see if it was just that one game, but the studio show was SD
as well. What gives?

The Bengals game was in glorious HD here (Dayton area). Must have been
a local decision by your local station.

I don't recall if the half-time show was HD or SD.

CBS is very disappointing. I watch Rock Star: SuperNova and it's in SD, not
even Dolby 5.1. Fox is broadcasting American Idol and the new Duets show in
HD/5.1 - I don't watch them but I'm always curious about new HD shows.
Whatever the CBS awards show was last week (Emmys?) wasn't in HD. They are
probably the same network that broadcast the Country Music Awards in SD a
few months back too. The Early Show is SD and I haven't heard anything about
them going to HD, even though Good Morning America has been HD for many
months now and The Today Show is going HD apparently this month. Someone at
CBS needs to get fired. Just my opinion.

Sorry, I should have been more specific - this was in Atlanta, over
Comcast cable. I was very surprised because I remember last year's
football being HD, and I thought I heard there was HD coverage for every
game, but maybe that was Fox.

I have been noticing that too... CBS used to lead the way in HD programming

Sounds like the financial reins are being drawn in...

BTW, not only Supernova but they did the same last year with INXS

While HD availability is improving and more of my customers have it I
think it can still be argued that not enough are watching. It took my
wife 2-3 months to stop watching the locals in the SD... Like Dale
always used to say, the hard part is changing behavior. I know others
that prefer SD locals because they can format the black side bars away;
ya know, the picture just HAS to be filled out or you are somehow being
robbed of something...

I disagree completely. Yes, there are some specials that should have
been in HD ... I don't know why they weren't. But when it comes to
investing in HD, no network has invested more than CBS. Granted, CBS
falls behind when it comes to football, but:

- From what I can recall, with the exception of Survivor, their entire
prime time lineup is high definition. And rumor has it (off the record),
this will be the last SD season of Survivor.

- They are upgrading ALL of their O&O stations to HD so they can start
broadcasting local news in high definition

- They are upgrading all their remote units with new digital gear so
that field reports will be in high definition.

- They are building three completely new studios in 3 markets to support
digital production (forget which)

- The remainder of their programming will be upgraded to HD when the
equipment is at the end of its life cycle. Don't forget that for some of
these shows to go HD it requires a LOT more than just cameras. New sets,
make up, production equipment, transmission equipment, etc.

I tend to think of CBS as an HD-content leader as well; their prime time
shows seemed to beat most network shows into HD. That's why I was so
surprised at the football; the game we had was absolutely awful, much
worse than standard SD fare.

I agree with Daniel regarding the non-HD game, it took me by surprise as
well, but the minute the game finished the US Open tennis coverage was in
HD, which was what I personally appreciated as a tennis player.

CBS is covering the US Open in HD much before anyone else was even thinking
about consistent HD services with maximum quality, so I agree with Shane
regarding how much CBS has done for HD.

Every year at the Display Search's HDTV conference in Beverly Hills CBS
speaks about how much effort they put into HD quality, maintaining 1080i
with the maximum bit rate they can in a dedicated single channel (not like
all the other multi-casting quality broadcaster butchers do), and they are
proud of such effort. Although I agree that some of the last events that I
expected to the in 16:9 HD were not that way, such as the game Daniel
mentions.

There has to be a reason, and it could be related to the simultaneous
coverage of the US Open in NY that might have demanded a large number of
mobile HD equipment sitting in NY for two weeks for the Open, which might
have precluded them to cover HD in other locations, as they would have done
otherwise.

If there is broadcasting network that deserves credit for their HD efforts
since the beginning of HD in 1998 is CBS (in addition to PBS of course).

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

I wondered about the US Open taking some cameras/crews - the Open was
great, and tennis is wonderful in HD. I guess I just keep hoping that
someday I won't have to think/hope that and event is in HD - they just
all will be.

CBS was the first channel I was able to receive in high definition after buying my Sony XBR and a Mitsubishi receiver six years ago. I'll never forget my first reaction, totally incredible. You could see the beads of sweat on the faces of the actors and actresses. It was far far beyond what I had expected. They had the only hd signal available in the New York City area after the antenna on the World Trade Center disintegrated (CBS was on the Empire State Building) and I also hold them in high esteem for their early and magnificent efforts at recording and broadcasting in HD.
