----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

We are all indebted to Rodolfo La Maestra for his untiring educational and
advisory service to the HDTV movement in. We, who know him, are sure this
self directed task will continue in an even more amplified way. I conceived
the Tips List as being the school for an army of enthusiasts who were
energized and prepared to lead the public transition to HDTV. This list
swelled to over 1000 at its height. I heeded the warning to avoid an
atmosphere in the list that would invite the silliness that other forums had
suffered from, namely, immature fanboys pushing their modest knowledge into
the foreground at the expense of superior research.

We also understood that no network or channel could afford the higher cost
of production and distribution of HDTV signals without an audience to pay
for it. We recognized that we could not build that audience without there
being a growing understanding and appreciation of the products that go into
it. Whether consciously or unconsciously those devoted to the tips list have
distributed information about HDTV like a dandelion does its seeds. I am
told it takes as few as 100 devoted people to set a world movement into
motion. We had ten times that and all forming a single line to insure the
impact. I am proud of every one of those in the Tips list who absorbed an
uncharacteristic amount of information in order to share the beginning of a
new era with others. That formed a noble core for this movement in which all
who participated should be proud.

Rodolfo's departure signals an end to the need for this kind of closed
forum. Shane will make announcements later that will take us to the next
step of this transition.

Thank you all for doing what you did to further the cause. This has never
been a movement just about pretty pictures but rather it exists to bring a
greater understanding of the world and through that a better enjoyment of
our lives. Congratulations to all of you for graduating into the next era.

Thank you,

In other words, we are reading the obit of Tips? That is a shame as it still
has a need and a use. I would highly discourage the discontinuation; rather
I would encourage the addition of a few more good members that will add in a
positive, ego-less way.

The Tips List will go in, but in a slightly different form. It is 2008
after all, and so we should be utilizing other more advanced tools at
our disposal for collaboration about these subjects. I will send a link
later tonight to a new forum I will be creating for Tips List discussions.

What Dale and I have discussed is creating a "restricted" forum, which
only those on this list can post to and read. It will have the same
exclusivity this list has, but will be part of our online website. You
can even elect to be notified of new postings via email, the same way
the tips list operates.

The advantage for both you and us is that we won't have to maintain a
separate account just for the tips list, and you will not have to manage
changing two email addresses, should you ever need to change it. All
account info will be in a single place.

The one question Dale and I have bounced back and forth is: Should we
allow the general public to read the postings there?

Thoughts?

If you allow the general public to read, you must make it easy to join
and post as well. Thought must be provided to keep the signal to
noise ratio to an acceptable level or the skilled folks needed most
here will stop contributing as the effort will outweigh the benefit.

I don't participate routinely in the other forums because of the
problem listed above. I read each and every post here, contributing
where I can, since the s/n ratio is very good.

On the flip side, we don't want to be seen as an elitist group who
will not accept outsiders.

I don't know what the correct solution is but thought must be given so
this valuable resource doesn't turn into the typical forum filled with
trolls and misinformation.

I agree with Jeff about the S/N ratio!

It's kinda of neat to be part of this "early adopter list". Most here care
more about quality than quantity....the "Costco" crowd we generally are
not...it would be cool to maintain that and at the same time not sound
snobbish... I really appreciate Rodolfo but also appreciate others from the
group as well.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

This is a tough one. I think the core question is, how does this list
differ from the AVS, Home Theater Spot, and other forums? To me, the
difference is huge - those sites are great for searching for
encyclopedic data, asking a question that will get thousands or more
eyes on it, and interacting with a broad swath of people. The tips
list, on the other hand, feels like a private message board for a
group of people with a real connection, posting messages that are
mostly on-topic, not politically charged, very rarely incendiary, and
usually insightful. While the purpose of the Tips List might have
originally been to educate the masses, I feel that mission has been
accomplished.

However you may feel about the state of the HDTV industry, I would say
'mature' is a fair statement. We no longer have the need for drawn out
technical discussions of the successor to DVD, ASTC-tuner mandates, or
other huge important topics. Gone are the days of Dale's all-nighters
composing emails that give you goosebumps when reading his passionate
discussions of the future of television - it's here! We get an
occasional ask for tips about a particular product purchase, a
recommendation for what to buy, and sometimes general discussion about
the industry. The volume of mail has dropped considerably, and i've
thought more than once about dropping off - only to realize that when
I really have an HD-related question, that this is THE first place I
post. Those of us who have been on the list for some years now have
come to be like old friends; new participants are rare (but welcome),
and some old faces disappear (Rodolfo's will be a huge loss).

Personally, I won't subscribe to the new forum - I simply don't have
time for it. I don't want to click on a link in email to find a new
post or to check the various threads that are updated. This list email
volume has been low enough to pick through occasionally and read the
posts to keep up with what was current, and the occasional news article.

Since I bought my lifetime subscription in March of 2004 (just found
the email receipt), the world of HD has changed dramatically. All the
big issues have been overcome (in my opinion) and we are in more of a
"maintenance" phase. A few tweaks here and there, generational
improvements in products and technology, but nothing as exciting as
the past 5 years. I've moved on with my life, no longer spend nights
and weekends downloading the latest version of PowerDVD or reading
reviews of DVDs, and closed down the little HD business I started long
ago.

If this is the end of the tips list as we know it, I would like to
express my sincere thanks to those I have gotten to know over these
last few years. Your wisdom and advice, questions, comments, and
replies, have been a welcome change from the faceless forums filled
with 1/3 bogus info, 1/3 blowhards, and 1/3 true information. It has
been a pleasure sharing this space with you!

Why would the public being allowed. We have enough Joe six pack level of thought on this list already. There has been a growing thought on how low mass .marketing prices have become. Stay the course that a quality system can be had for a reasonable price . Just not cheap. We must to emphasize hd is about quality of picture + sound ,not interior designer thought on small sets with htib's.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Thoughts?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

In no way am I suggesting we open this list up to the public for
posting. It needs to remain "privileged" or "by invitation only". The
only question is: Should we allow the public to read what we post?

They will undoubtedly learn something from our dialog.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Shane,

I can see no downside to the public having viewing privileges. Heck, many
of us do just that most of the time.

Agreed. I live in both worlds (the "mega forums" and the intimacy of
the tips list here) and each has its place. Not only do I
participate on a regular basis here (if "regular" is the operative
term because it's more about a need to know or share basis rather
than a daily grind) but I've been a Moderator on one of those "other"
forums - The Home Theater Forum - since its inception over 11 years
ago. (Sidebar: While I am personally biased towards the HTF as being
the best of the HT "forums" out there - especially in the area of
software discussion as well as being a truly "moderated" forum, which
means that people either remain civil or they are banned, I fully
understand that for Hardware you go to AVS. The biggest problem with
that site - other than attitude - is the fact that sprinkled in with
the gems is an awful lot of blatantly incorrect advice and it's
accepted as gospel by those who don't know any better. It's truly
the Wikipedia of HT <g>).

But my point here is not to argue the merits of all the forums - big
and small - but to make an general observation about the changing
nature of the Internet and information sources in general. Yes,
change is inevitable and I feel that stagnation breeds a certain
degree of apathy. There is a point reached where we realize that a
change, either personal or institutional, is appropriate with no
malice intended toward others who choose to remain in the status
quo. I feel that this was probably a contributing factor to
Rodolfo's recent decision (without assuming to know something about
his personal circumstances.) Coincidentally (although probably quite
germane to this whole discussion) over on the Home Theater Forum we
just lost one of our most respected Moderators, Robert Crawford
(Crawdaddy to his friends). The circumstances surrounding his
resignation appear to be very similar to Rodolfo's actions. Nothing
personal was involved, just a feeling by him that it was time to
strike out in another direction. I would rate Crawdaddy's knowledge
of film to be on a par with Rudolfo's knowledge about Audio and Video
Hardware - in other words, at a world class level. Although I doubt
that the two men ever met, I find it interesting that both arrived at
what is essentially an identical decision within days of each
other. To me this speaks volumes about how the cyberspace landscape
is changing and evolving. Rather than hanging on until it becomes
totally tedious, both individuals decided to go out at the top of
their games. While there are the inevitable, "Please don't go!"
responses in both cases I prefer to give them thanks for the many,
many contributions.

Right now Dale and Shane are considering various alternatives to move
on to the next level - whatever that may entail. I anticipate some
rather spirited dialogue over the next few weeks and months (CEDIA
2008 might be interesting in that regard). I'm sure whatever they
come up with will be worthwhile.

The times, they are a'changin'

I suppose I would be considered the 'general public', in which case I would
vote to allow the general public.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

In December of 2001 I bought my first HDTV, Mitsubishi WS65819, and in
January of 2002 completed ISF training along with an equipment purchase.
About mid 2002 I came across a site called I Love HDTV, became a member
of the TIPS List, and thus began my involvement with educating the
public and eventually becoming an author.

During the first year I kept hearing from TIPS members about a gentlemen
named Rodolfo La Maestra who had garnered much respect. At about the end
of that first year he returned and in him I found a compatriot for
quality imaging and quality audio performance as well as being a walking
encyclopedia of knowledge. I am indebted as others to his selfless
sharing of information, in depth and in detail, adding to my own volumes
of performance knowledge.

Rodolfo and I had built a relationship over the last 2 years that became
even closer over the last several months. Our first exchange after
months of no activity on the TIPS was about LCD performance directed at
both Rodolfo and I. It is unfortunate that this exchange escalated for
both of us to a point of mutual misunderstanding leading to responses
that put neither of us in the best light for you, our readers.

It is regrettable that he has chosen to leave us and I wish him the best
in his retirement years to fully enjoy his family and friends.
