Copying DVDs?

That's a sticky wicket. Yes, Hollywood is TRYING to crack down on
anything that circumvents copy protection, under the provisions of the
DMCA .... BUT ... there is previous law that gives fair use to purchased
media, which includes creating and maintaining "backup" copies. So far
I haven't seen (that I can recall) where congress has let the **AA throw
the baby out with the bathwater.

Shane, I know full well about the "previous law" that lets owners backup
their copies, it was broadly written for software, and the DCMA layers on it
with its anti-reverse engineering language. That's why 123 Studios gave up
years ago. I was just stunned to see that link on that mainstream news
site, and the site appears real enough.

I was surprised too ... and would be even more surprised if it stays up.

I have a solution I used for backing up my media, and it involved a key
piece of "decryption" technology that I could only find referenced by
name, not directly linked to. And that software had been shut-down as
well ... I had to do a Google search to find a previous version of it.
Bottom-line: It's doable with proper research and time spent ... and
likely always will be.

And I sleep well at night knowing that I only use this on media that I
own, and that when my kids (4 and 6) fling their new Cars DVD (or as
they call it: Disney-Pixar's Cars) across the room, I can easily spit
out another one.

Shane,

That kids flinging DVDs across the room bit sounds too familiar. BTW, it
does not get better when they grow older. The syndrome then extends to
software too (I have 2 teenage girls). The disks are lost, scratched,
cracked, or just generally gooey from make-up and other substances.

I read that the program you are talking about only received a 1 star rating
out of 5.Anyone know of any program for MACs? I also have two teenage girls
and they just stepped on a Playstation game they got for Christmas.(do
these programs work for PS2 game formats?) $50 bucks down the drain!

No James, PS2 games are not a DVD, and not a conventional CD either. I have
seen PS2 copying programs out there in the past but cannot think of that
now. Do a Google or other web search and you'll likely find one, but I
can't vouch whether it will work.

Be careful ... I found when I was doing some research a few years ago
that one of the ones most likely to come up in a search engine was
actually a virus and did nothing to help with game backup.
