Digital TV and power outages

Recently the weather has been very bad in the midwest, with widespread
power outages due to winter storms. We've had a few down here in the
Dallas area, too. While many people get out there portable radios, there
are also a fair number that will fire up the battery / or 12 volt powered TV.

Since we are only two years away from the demise of analog television, I
would have thought we would start seeing some battery or 12 volt digital
receivers on the market. I'm curious to know if the costs / size of an
atsc tuner in a portable model is too cost prohibitive to make a portable
available.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the future of portable televisions in an
HD world?

On a related note, as of today, the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex, the 7th
largest television market in the US, has yet to offer an HD television
newscast. WFAA-DT, channel 8.1 recently moved into their new studios at
the American Airlines Center, but yet, they are still an SD
broadcast. WFAA has two sub channels, one which is radar, and the other a
tower cam shot of the airport (you would think WFAA would air Texas Cable
News on that channel). Rumor has it that KTVT-DT (CBS 11.1) will start
their HD news sometime this quarter, but that is an unconfirmed rumor.

John- There are no technical barriers to a 12-volt DTV. Economics has
caused designers to concentrate on the more profitable high end TVs, but
eventually they will serve the whole market.

Note that while an ATSC tuner is somewhat more power hungry than an NTSC
tuner, the LCD screen needs less power than a CRT, so on balance there is no
obstacle here. -Ken
