Direct & MPEG4

Guys: Perhaps someone can set me straight, but I thought that I heard
that Direct would replace all HD MPEG2 equipment with HD MPEG4 boxes at
no cost to the consumer. This may apply only to STB's sold directly by
Direct. Today Phillip Swann suggested otherwise in his emailing.

I am unaware of any proposal or offering by DISH to upgrade their subs
in a similar manner.

Please advise...

Those are and always were unsubstantiated rumors.

We're talking about the same company gouging customers for the NFL HD feed.
What do you think the likelihood they will eat a $500+ HD box when the time
comes?

I understand Bob's rationale, but since both DirecTV and Dish Network announced their move to
MPEG-4, the announcements were made to support their customer base regarding equipment, dish and
STB.

However, they were careful enough to avoid detailing how that would be implemented, the
announcements repeated at CES on January confirmed that position, they will not let subscribers down
on this conversion, especially those that spent $1000 on a DVR while the company was cooking the
switch.

The statements from both companies at CES in person on my meetings as a subscriber and a press
representative, were all conducive to make available some kind of arrangement for equipment
replacement, they were not rumors.

The statements could have just said instead "we do not know yet if we will support equipment
replacement", but they did not. I know that the use of the wrong words could have created an
stampede towards cable for both satellite companies, but I do not believe they provided those
positive statements "only" to avoid stampedes.

Unfortunately, it is taking too long for those plans to be disclosed, but they are always like that,
DirecTV waits until the channel is on my screen to tell me that they have a new offer. One subject
that could have affected their timing on their MPEG-4 plans was "Voom is now down (beginning 2005),
how do we adjust our already complex plans to gain a competitive advantage?"

I would no panic, but I would not do large investments on either company (HD DVRs for example) until
they come out with the upgrade path, I would not use the reason of not knowing the details to prompt
a switch to cable, unless other factors make that move a no brainer.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Rodolfo, you are a much more trusting soul than I. :-)

Coming from the same company who has repeatedly promised added HD content
and failed, and promises you 1500 HDTV channels(what planet are they on?). I
wouldn't hold my breath over a quickie verbal commitment at a trade show.

Marketing geeks can have short memories when it suits them. And "some kind
of arrangement" is about as vague as it gets.

I think Howard was counting on the "no cost" part of his question.
