Guys,

Anyone have a user opinion on the relative merits of the above suppliers and
HD DVRs in the Phoenix area?

I've had Direct Tv for a long while, but in the MPEG-2 form, not MPEG-4, and
have received my local digital and HD channels OTA.

I'm considering whether to switch to Cox or upgrade my Direct Tv dish and
buy DTV's HD DVR.

The SD channels on DTV are awful, as we all know, but I'm most interested in
the HD quality of signal, compressed they may be, programming and DVR
experiences.

All user opinions are very welcome.

Many thanks,

Mike Malkin

Michael,

We have been running HD Cox in my house since the fall of Voom. I have to
chime in and say "stay away", the pickings are slim, the DVRs often need
exchanging, and PQ is OK, but OTA HD is far better. I am working on my wife
to maybe switch to Dish and get some of the Voom channels back in the
bargain. The broadband service on Cox is good, though.

If the programming on Cox Phoenix's system meets your needs but you
are worried about the DVR, consider the TivoHD or Tivo S3 cable card
DVR. The DVR features are far superior to those provided by Cox.

I haven't used Dish or DirecTV for so long, my opinion is not useful.

But the Tivo units would tie me into the cable TV... I don't think I want
that yet.

Michael,

Just my 2 cents but I have had luck with DirecTV in that because I bought
the MPEG 2 Tivo DVR they gave me FREE equipment to be able to view their
MPEG 4 broadcasts. Their Hughes DVR seems to work very similar to the Tivo
in that you can FF through commercials.

I even get local HD on the dish and no longer use my OTA antenna.

They are working hard to get the bugs out of the MPEG 4 delivery and the
pixilation errors they had in the beginning are just about gone.
