Anyone know what the current best deal for switching to Direct TV service
and its HD programming? I heard that at times there are really good deals
available but not advertised to the public.

There are some deals reported within the last couple of days where people
were getting sub $200 for an HD Tivo after rebates and programming credits.
Unfortunately I think that's a retention deal.

Call 'em up and work them against your local cable co. See what they will
do. I got a junk mail flyer from them the other day saying they wanted me
back. That was interesting, since I haven't been a customer since '01 and
I've moved since. I tossed it and don't recall the specifics.

Do not go for the $500-$650 deals. That's a ridiculous offer these days with
so many cable cos doing zero down and no upfront cost deals. The cost of the
HD Tivo has come down no less than twice in the last 30-60 days, so I think
they are feeling the heat. Their reported new sub numbers last quarter would
also support that thinking.

Also keep in mind the pending MPEG2/MPEG4 transition. Your box is probably
good for 2, maybe 3 years, but you may limit yourself on channel
availability when MPEG4 really hits its stride.

Bob,
If by chance you come across where you saw that Direct TV promotion I would
appreciate you forwarding it to me. I have not found any deal better than
$499. Thanks

It is wild but after following the AVS forum and Tivo forums the deals that
current customers get are so much better than for new customers. I don't get
it, current customers can get HDTIVO for $299 -100 rebate and $100 back when
they activate the box. They also get Free HBO/Showtime/starz for 6 months
and $5 off HD programming for 12 months

I tried to request the same and no one would budge. The best deal they would
give was $599 - $100 rebate. And $69/month for their Total choice package .

When I was in Sales it was the new customers that always got the best deals
and when current customers found out about them then they received them
also. It is like they do not want to grow and would rather not have me as a
customer than to give me the deals current subscribers get.

Is backwards from usual, but it is finally nice to be recognized as a good
customer and get the deals for being a customer, vs. the usual new customer
gets deal and old one gets screwed!

So who is the smart one? If I know they are giving deals like this to other
I just wont sign up if I cannot get the same. Hey that's just me, I don't
like paying more than the other guy. I'll just stick with Cable and its HD
DVR. Don't see how they will exponentially grow their new subscriber base
with this business model.
Also Joe its not because they love you so much it is because they do not
want you to jump to Dish or cable and usually only give the deals to
subscribers out of contract and you have to request all the discounts and
from what I have read it takes a few phone calls.

Point being: they ought to give the deals to both new and old subscribers?
Works for me as well.
