Now that dish has absorbed voom, is there any compelling reason to go
with directv?

I know Dish currently has more HD programming since taking over Voom but
won't that end when they go MPEG-4?

Besides the NFL Football package I was wondering the same thing?

My sister bartered with a friend for a Direct TV HD DVR that was not
needed. She was also paying about $28/month for the use of two HD DVR's from
Time Warner. Once I told her that it only cost's $5.95/month for as many
Tivos in her house she was estatic. She told me that there may be a new deal
for new customers to have a Direct TV HD DVR included in her new service
depending on the length of contract. I think she is all set to say bye-bye
to TW.

AT the moment (or at least when the NFL season begins) the only DIRECT
benefit is the HD-NFL programming (which is quite expensive).

Dish has more channels, due to VOOM. These channels are often fun, but
they seem to have a short play-list.

Some claim that the DISH PQ is superior to that of DIRECT, but I have no
direct experience on that issue.

The HD-PVR issue with DISH is nearly legendary, but some users are only
mildly annoyed by the bugs.

As yet there is no concrete evidence that DIRECT will offer additional
channels of HD with the advent of MPEG4, other than locals, which one
would already have with OTA service.

Howard, if the D* NDS rumors are true, the DISH PVR horror stories may soon
be taking a back seat. NDS has very little experience with DVR rollouts and
NONE in the US where they are the primary vendor. Sure, they've done
middleware, but to be the "go to" guys for the whole box?

To me it seems like D* is taking a big chance with a rather important new
piece of hardware.

Jason,

NDS is a company and their web site says: " NDS is the leading global
supplier of open end-to-end digital pay TV solutions for the secure delivery
of entertainment and information to television set-top boxes and IP
devices."
