----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

This past week, I received the Sunday ticket promotional material with the cute yellow flag. I am not going to spend the
additional $99 for HD Sunday ticket. Last season picture quality of the SD games was so bad they were unwatchable. I will not
renew the Sunday ticket. Hopefully, enough people will follow suite so D* will recognize their folly and provide the HD games for
not extra charge.

I called and told them NOT to automatically renew my Sunday Ticket. I have
had it for four years. Last year, with the HD games was the first time I
thought it actually worth the money. I may have been able to justify the
increase in the base package price, but there is no way that I will pay that
AND the extra $100 for HD. Of course, now, the HD games would be the only
reason to continue the subscription.

I too hope that enough people will vote with their wallets and not renew so
that they might see the error of their ways.

Unfortunately, the HD viewers are still in such a small minority that I am
afraid many SD folks will just continue to accept the price hikes.

However the price is dropped only for past customers. I was looking at
becoming a new customer until I discovered the gouging going on.

I too called DirecTV a few weeks ago and cancelled my NFL Sunday Ticket. I
have had the NFL Sunday Ticket since the fall of 1995 and that was the
reason I went to DirectTV. The $99.00 for the HD games in addition to
$219.00 makes for $318.00. Way too much for just 17 weeks of Sunday
afternoon games. I get CBS and FOX HD over the air from Dayton and
Cincinnati so I will have to be satisfied with what they show each Sunday
afternoon in HD. I was so upset about the additional $99.00 for the HD games
that I also cancelled my NBA League Pass at the same time I cancelled my NFL
Sunday Ticket because I believe they will do the same with the NBA games.

I for one would only go back to NFL Sunday Ticket if DirecTV would drop the
cost of HD games to zero. $219.00 is enough for the NFL Sunday Ticket.

DirecTV is spending millions to send up four MPEG 4 satellites for HD. It
will cost them additional millions to change out satellite dishes and HD
receivers to receive the MPEG 4 signal.

I ask you tipsters why didn't DirecTV just install an antenna (just antenna
20 miles from towers and include pre-amp when 20-50 miles from towers) free
of charge for the people that subscribe to their HD package to allow them to
get local HD in their area. From what I understand DirecTV only plans to
provide the major local HD (CBS,FOX, NBC and ABC) but not to include HD from
PBS,WB and UPN. Some very good antennas are now available that when
installed are hardly noticeable.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, so humor me:

Am I to gather that it is the general "vocal consensus" of this list that
HD is not worth a premium? I mean, most here don't argue with paying an
extra $10 or $11 for the HD packages from their respective providers. What
is it about the DirecTV deal that rubs you the wrong way? Is it the
percentage increase? What if it were lower? Is there no condition under
which you would accept anything more than continued free coverage?

And let's keep it civil ... just trying to gauge the "community pulse" on
this one.

Shane,

It was costly (IMO) from the start and now to ask for such a huge increase
seems like gouging to me!!

Roger,

The answer is simple -- the vast majority of consumers don't want antennas.
Also, the fact that cable can provide HD locals without requiring an antenna
and without any major installation hassles (beyond what cable customers are
already accustomed to) provides them a massive competitive advantage over
satellite.

DirecTV and DISH have both learned this painful lesson with NTSC locals
during the initial rollout of small dish satellite services. So why would
they "unlearn it" for HD?

The cost of launching all those additional satellites is undoubtedly high,
but clearly not as high as the long-term cost of surrendering the future of
the subscription television market to cable.

Doug

20 miles from towers and include pre-amp when 20-50 miles from towers) free
of charge for the people that subscribe to their HD package to allow them to
get local HD in their area. From what I understand DirecTV only plans to
provide the major local HD (CBS,FOX, NBC and ABC) but not to include HD from
PBS,WB and UPN. Some very good antennas are now available that when
installed are hardly noticeable.

Shane,

The package is not free. The sticking point is that it is already something
that I feel is expensive. At the price they are getting for the basic
package, it should include the HD content. From my perspective, had the base
package stayed at the same price that it was, and they asked for an
additional $25.00 for the HD, I would not have liked it, but I probably
could have lived with it. If you take the additional cost for the base
package and add the $100 for the HD, include fees taxes etc. This in effect
comes very close to doubling my cost over what I paid last year. This puts
it completely out of the budget. Besides the budget issue, it is a matter of
principal. The increase does indeed too closely resemble "gouging" for my
taste.

What
is it about the DirecTV deal that rubs you the wrong way? Is it the
percentage increase? What if it were lower? Is there no condition under
which you would accept anything more than continued free coverage?

Does anyone know the exact added cost of these HDTV productions or the added
licensiing fees from the NFL (who controls the pricing) to DirecTV over that
of the conventional telecasts?

I do not live in a NFL franchise location. What do a pair of season tickets
on the 50 yard line cost for one's home team in the NFL? Be curious to know
as a contrast to the charges on TV.

Craig,

It worries me when I see someone say that HD content should be provided at
no additional charge, though, of course, you're entitled to tha opinion.
Personally, I don't think the problem is that DirecTV is charging an
additional fee for NFL Sunday Ticket in HD -- the problem is the magnitude
of the premium they're trying to obtain. I think this is made worse by the
fact that DirecTV provided HD ST last year, with little or no added charge.

Clearly, if there's no way for a broadcaster or programmer to make
additional money from HD programming, there won't be any HD programming to
complain about. The problem with the NFL Sunday Ticket package isn't the
premium for better content/presentation, it's the fact that DirecTV has
massively overplayed its hand.

Also, it seems to me that the ST issue is a precursor to another HD
programming issue that will soon be rearing its exceedingly ugly head -- how
are cable and satellite going to navigate and restructure pricing as things
move from a mostly SD world to one that offers ever-increasing volumes of HD
programming?

One of the problems I personally have with current HD package pricing is
that you're required to buy one of the major SD packages as a pre-requisite
to HD programming. While the overall price I'm paying is marginally
acceptable, if the HD cost keeps going up AND the SD underlying cost remains
unchanged, I'm going to be extremely unhappy.

I think this is part and parcel of what DirecTV is struggling to work out
with the Sunday Ticket package pricing.

FWIW, if I were a teleco executive responsible for figuring out how to
accelerate consumer acceptance of IPTV, this SD/HD transition and pricing is
most definitely one of the areas I'd be looking to exploit.

Regards,

Additional satellites?

Before anyone hurts their arm patting DirecTV on the back, keep in mind
those new satellites were going up anyway. They were originally intended for
Enterprise two-way data services. That business model seems to have flopped,
so they redirected these birds for more HDTV service.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the HD premiums are an attempt to recover
from that failed revenue stream.

The satellite business model seems to be charge for DVRs and charge a
ridiculous premium for HD. IMO, as long as that continues the cable cos will
just eat their lunch. Hope they get happy with the current market share,
because I can't see it moving up significantly under that scenario,
especially once the triple play services start taking hold. I see the cable
and telcos beating up the satellite providers from both sides.

Shane,

The package is not free. The sticking point is that it is already something
that I feel is expensive. At the price they are getting for the basic
package, it should include the HD content. From my perspective, had the
base
package stayed at the same price that it was, and they asked for an
additional $25.00 for the HD, I would not have liked it, but I probably
could have lived with it. If you take the additional cost for the base
package and add the $100 for the HD, include fees taxes etc. This in effect
comes very close to doubling my cost over what I paid last year. This puts
it completely out of the budget. Besides the budget issue, it is a matter
of
principal. The increase does indeed too closely resemble "gouging" for my
taste.

What
is it about the DirecTV deal that rubs you the wrong way? Is it the
percentage increase? What if it were lower? Is there no condition under
which you would accept anything more than continued free coverage?

Granted, my local team is the Cincinnati Bengals ... but their season
ticket prices are the same as "gate" prices: ~$50. Multiply that times 8
home games and it's $400. The first year, you must also buy a "license",
which is another $400.

But I doubt you'll find any team in the country with season ticket seats
available on the 50 yard line.

It's all a moot point anyway, HD is better than being there ;-)

Thanks for your response and you do make sense, but let me go a little
further with this.

People with DirecTV and Dish have had to have a satellite dish installed and
now for MPEG 4 HD a new dish installed. Most have gone to satellite TV
because of quality. One wire from satellite dish to TV rather then the cable
companies dish wired throughout the city to TV. The antenna I am referring
to could be mounted to satellite dish by DirecTV and again provide excellent
quality of local HD through off air signal. Again one wire now from antenna
to TV.

Its the cost of this massive change over, mostly for local HD, that is now
rippling down into NFL Sunday Ticket. NFL Sunday Ticket has gone from
$150.00 a couple years ago to now over $300.00 to include HD. Many will pay
this increase but for me its the straw that broke the camel's back. Remember
for me I can still watch NFL games in HD Sunday afternoons from Dayton and
Cincinnati CBS and FOX stations so its easier for me, then some, to make the
choice to cancel NFL Sunday Ticket.

I will still pay DirecTV's going price for their HD package unless they get
too out of line with cable prices and their is little or no drop in HD
quality, at my house, in changing from Satellite to cable.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I second the motion..no life without football.

I just called Direct TV. Last year I paid $159 for the Sunday Ticket.
Because I am a former subscriber it will cost me $219 this year. For the HD
package it will cost now $49 additional. So the total package will cost me
$268 total. This represents an increase of $109.

I was a season ticket holder of the Cincinnati Bengals until I moved to Las
Vegas in 1979, 26 years ago. At that time it cost me $900 + for two tickets
to the games. I don't know the exact price now but I am sure it is in the
range of $1500.

While I was on the phone, I told the representative about the furor on the
forum. Naturally you are not going to get an unbiased answer from them but
in fairness they are increasing the games in HD this year to over 100+
games. They are also adding some unique coverage..the red zone which will
show 7-8 games on the screen (I guess in individual boxes) at the same time.
Also they are going to have condensed games available for all the games
after 12 A.M eastern time. All the main action in each game that will take
about 30 minutes.

Although they may be taking advantage of us football addicts (guys like
Hugh and I), to me $109 is not the end of the world. I understand those who
are resisting because of principle but they have a monopoly on this. Direct
TV is the only place you can get all the games and no other provider can
match this. I still am a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals and if I didn't have
this service I would see maybe one game this year (Sunday night game) or at
best 2 more games.

It all is a matter of personal priorities but this group represents early
adapters to HDTV. There are a myriad of prices to get this up and going but
we are paying through the nose to see HDTV in the first place. Some of us
pay an additional $300 or $400 to have people like Richard come out and give
us the best picture possible. So it doesn't make a lot of sense to me that
all this furor has developed for $109 increase.

Just my two cents.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

SUnday tix had over 100 FBall games in HD last season,
they are pulling your leg on that issue.
7-8 each week was the norm last season.
Take week of 11/05/04 I think they had 9 games on
Sunday Tix in HD, week of 10/01/04 they had 8 games in
HD
My 2 cents

about the furor on
the
forum. Naturally you are not going to get an unbiased
answer from them
but
in fairness they are increasing the games in HD this
year to over 100+
games. They are also adding some unique coverage..the
red zone which
will
show 7-8 games on the screen (I guess in individual
boxes) at the same
time.
