DLP Suggestions

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I have yet another neighbor interested in purchasing his first HD display
for Christmas. He wants a DLP and would like it to be in the 55" to 60"
range and he has a budget of 2500.00. He can if pushed go to 3000.00. Any
suggestions? He would like to stay away from internet purchases with the
exception of Crutchfield. I have never been a huge proponent of the
technology otherwise I'd help him myself. Two prerequisites, HDMI or DVI
input and calibration friendly.

Thanks,

It's probably too late now, but the best DLPs I've seen were last year's
Samsung HL-P models. If he can find one on "close out," that would be the
best performance buy, and probably the best bang for buck, since these are
720p-only models.

As far as calibration-friendly goes, to the best of my knowledge the HL-Ps
have no real rivals. But even this is dependent on getting the latest HL-P
firmware from Samsung, in the event it's not already installed.

Kevin Miller did a series of excellent 1080p display reviews over at CNET a
few days ago, and I'd encourage you to read his on-target assessment of the
new HL-R Samsungs. And there might be some other helpful information in
there for your neighbor, even though this article also includes LCoS
displays.

The biggest complaint about the HL-R models has been that you can't
turn of the DNIe processing. Fortunately, people have figured out
how to do so. DIY folks can research it at the AVS Forum and most
ISF calibrators should be able to handle it no problem.

I would still prefer the HL-P's for some other minor reasons, but I
do now recommend the HL-R's (with the DNIe disabled).
