Interesting reading...
It goes into detail about the years we have ahead of us before there is some
kind of simple connection.
Some gotchas:
At launch of these HD players, we will be using analog outputs like with DVD
Audio
SPDIF/toslink is only capable of 5.1 DD/DTS
HDMI can carry the data today BUT it would have to already be decoded within
the PLAYER. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your perspective
The HDMI 1.3 spec that was mentioned refers to a future version in which
HDMI would have the capability to transport the raw audio from player to
receiver (again, the current spec does not support this)
Even then, the content provider could choose to disallow this functionality
from their DVD, and Dolby says this 'may represent a majority of titles'.
So, you'd need to keep your 6 channel analog or HDMI connection and use the
internal decoder if you want to use DD or DTS HD
The good news is, it doesn't appear worthwhile to wait to wait for receivers
to provide the DD or DTS HD decoding. It sounds like it will be years before
this is even released, let alone common (the standard to do the decoding in
the receivers is not even part of the HDMI spec today).
Although this is not what I want to hear, at least it makes things simpler
for me. I'll buy an HDMI switch box and the HDMI to VGA converter, keep my
receiver and CRT RPTV, buy a HD-DVD and/or Blu-ray and be done with it. 2-3
years down the road and maybe a receiver upgrade may be in order.
I do think that DTS and DD are making a mistake by providing 2 "high
definition" audio formats. Do we really need DD Plus AND DD HD? I'm sure
there are technical benefits, but I can't imagine they outweigh the
complexity that the public will see.

Jason,
Here is a link to the new Dolby technologies. Again loss less audio
promised and eight discrete channels.

Since no one would answer my inquiries, I decided to do some research
myself. DTS ++ is now DTS HD. It offers 7.1 discrete channels of audio as
opposed to 6.1 in its current configuration on ES soundtracks. This simply
means that the additional rear channels will each contain separate
information as opposed to being a mirror of each other. If you are already
set up with two additional rear speakers in addition to standard left and
right surround then as far as speakers are concerned you should be set. It
will require a new receiver or amp and processor. Having said that, I would
wait at least a year until there is actually some software that supports
this format and the prices drop on the electronics.
Just my two cents.
