DVI switches

Has anyone heard any reference to quality difference between DVI switch
boxes? As my CRT RPTV is still on par with the best displays I've seen, I'm
interested in keeping it alive longer by purchasing one of the DVI-VGA
converters. To make it worthwhile, I'll need a DVI switch to support D-VHS,
cable, computer, and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray. An HDMI switch would be fine as well.
In doing some research, I find pricing for a 4-in 1-out DVI or HDMI switch
to range from $300 to $700. Because it's all digital, I want to believe they
are all roughly the same - just like Ethernet or other computer protocols.
I'd be interested to hear if I should believe otherwise.

Something else that came to mind while writing this email is the possibility
of using an A/V receiver for HDMI/DVI switching. I'd like to think that
receivers with this capability are right around the corner, but I'm guessing
otherwise. Also, with the new DTS and DD formats having been announced, but
not yet available, it seems we would have a new generation of receivers
coming in the next year or two - which would mean upgrading multiple times.

Is it just me, or do others feel that it's a waste of time to buy upgrade
until:
-1080p fixed pixel devices are $2000 or so and have better blacks;
-Receivers have hdmi switching and support DTS and DD+
-Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD are officially released and we know what effect that
technology will have on recording, etc.
-MPEG-4 equipment is released and we see what compatibility issues arise

I say this as someone who has a 'good' system that I'm very happy with, but
have an eye towards upgrading. For those of you in the business of selling
home theater, I'm guessing people like me are a hard sell these days.

Jason,

I've not seen much in the way of comments in the press about your first
issue. The only discussion that comes to mind was in the recent series on
LCoS displays by Dr. Raymond Soneira in the Nov., Dec. and Jan. issues of
Widescreen Review.

There are a bunch of AV receivers with digital video switching on the market
now.

Upgrade-itis is a challenge for me as well. My financial resources dictate
that I be very conservative. Inherently, I'm more of a gadget geek than my
budget allows. I feel your pain!

Best regards,
Alan

Since you are passing digital I doubt that would be a problem. There
might be a potential problem with distances though; speculation only.
