I agree. Not having the Emmys in HD is like showing an awards show
in the late 50's or early 60's in Black and White. This is (was) a
perfect opportunity to show off the state of television
technology. Instead they are showing off the sorry state of
television programming and programming decisions. It's not as though
they have a tough venue to prepare for an HD broadcast. And it
certainly wasn't a secret when and where the event was taking
place. Also, as I watched this show I have to say that it was, to
me, a very uneven presentation. I would have expected a more
professional presentation from NBC in all aspects, but it shows why
that network has fallen from #1 (to #4, if I got those statistics
correct.) I finally gave up on it and I'm using my DVR for the rest
so I can quickly scan the results.

Very disappointing, in my opinion.

I guess I'm expecting too much that THE awards show about TV would
manage to be in HDTV. Is this just another example of NBC's lagging
desperately behind, or has our local dropped the ball somehow? I'm
watching in Atlanta on Comcast.

It was reported days ago it would not be broadcast in HD, and the reporter
laughed about with the same irony.

Incredible, isn't it? I pretty much pass on anything not in HD these days,
personally.

Actually, I think Conan is doing a great job, and I'm
normally not a fan of his. The Newhart joke is inspired.
I am bothered by the continued missing of audio show-theme
queues once the "winner" is announced.
Of course, there is no excuse for not having the program in
HD. But then, there is no excuse for the Tony's on CBS being in NTSC
and the Kennedy Center Honors on CBS being in NTSC as sell as being a
show which has so much clipped out of it that by the time it is
broadcast it makes no sense. Maybe it has something to do with
money. I suspect it is more a lack of appreciation of the number of
HD sets out there and the importance of their viewership.
If you're going to do something, do it right.

I have no problem with Conan's hosting the show. Some of his stuff
was truly inspired and most of it hit the mark and was
entertaining. My main gripe (other than the lack of HD) was the lack
of polish for the overall presentation. You already mentioned missed
audio cues. To me it almost appeared like the regular project
directors (or whatever their titles are) took a sabbatical and left
people in charge who didn't really know how to coordinate
things. There were a lot of potentially great moments (like some of
the recaps and the Dick Clark tribute) that were tarnished a bit by
poor timing, visual and audio cues, and other assorted things that
gave me the feeling that I was watching an amateur production rather
than a network event. To me, this show had some of the best content
and the poorest execution I've seen in years - putting the lack of HD aside.
