Hi Everyone,

I will finally be able to upgrade my legacy rear projection HDTV in the next couple of weeks. Very exciting. I really enjoy all the advise given by all of you. I have learned a lot by following up all the conversations. I value your opinions and that is I wanted to post this as I want to make sure I make a good decision.

I have settled on LCD technology. 52 inch size. The models I am choosing between are the Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR4 and the Samsung LN52A650. Both 120HZ. After some consideration I think I am leaning towards the Sony. I would love to hear your experiences with either of these models if you have one or have calibrated one. I will be buying a Sony PS3 as my Blue Ray player.

My situation is opposite to Jason's. I will not be able to upgrade my Legacy receiver (5.1) yet so I will run the video signal directly from the player to the TV using the HDMI connection and use the optical for the audio to my receiver. This should work, right?

Thanks in advance.

Mario.

Mario,

I rather not comment on LCD panels other than saying that I do not favor LCD
on its current stage of development for serious viewing, especially on the
sizes of the domain of 1080p plasma.

Regarding your audio using optical, it is better to use the digital coax
connection if you have one. However, if you already have the optical cable
(and not the coax) do not worry about and go with it, you will be fine.

Your BD player would playback core Dolby at 640kbps (rather than 384k) and
core DTS at the max 1.5 Mbps over that legacy connection, extracted from the
hi-bit audio soundtracks of a blu-ray disc, and you will have an automatic
improvement in audio quality with the existing receiver and legacy wiring;
you will notice the difference if your audio system is good.

Enjoy.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
