Thanks for all the advice, guys. He wound up getting the Sharp DT-400.
Not a bad unit, and I enjoyed learning how to set it up for him. I know
have an appreciation for the complexities of front projectors! His room
has too much light and he doesn't want to deal with a professional
install, so I'm guessing he'll take it back. With an image size of about
8 feet wide, I could see the pixels when sitting about 12 feet from the
screen. Not bad, but enough to feel good about waiting for a 1080p front
projector.
One other thing to note - Best Buy recently changed their return policy
for front projectors - they now charge a 15% restock fee on open items.
It is so new they don't even have it printed on their receipts, and
agreed to waive it, but it's something to be aware of.

Jason,
Consider the limited budget, look into one of the new lines of DLP
projectors on the $3000 to $5000
range (720p), or the LCD model 51 from Sony with a DVDO HD+ scaler to
output the native 720p the
projector likes (bypassing its internal video processing), check the
2005 report for specs and
models.
However, I would not buy any of these products in a rush, neither I
would buy without first
consulting local installers about design and implications of room,
screen type/size, etc., neither
without confirming the possibility of a flat fee for installing a
product someone else sold (if
looking for rock bottom prices on the Internet for example).
Where in the budget of the $5K you fit the screen? Good screens are not
cheap and you have to suit
them to the chosen projector to get the best from both.
Best Regards,

I have a friend of a friend who wants to buy a front projector TODAY.
The only requirement is that he can pick it up at a big box store today,
have HDMI input (or at least DVI) and that it cost less than $5000. I
did some quick checking and there doesn't seem to be anything 1080p, so
that is out. So I guess I'm looking for the best 720p front projector
easily available. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jason
