Not a surprise really but still a major disappointment. Given the fact
per our discussions last week that the average consumer really does not
even understand what HD is and how it performs, two competing formats
for a High Def disc system will only make things more confusing and may
doom the High Def disc formats altogether unless the Play Station 3 is
able to saturate the market quickly. I noticed when I checked the specs
on the X-Box 360 recently that they did not even list any kind of HD DVD
format being supported by this product.

While this concentrates on the PS3 aspects I assume it will affect
consumer video as well.

Richard,

This article got the reason wrong, it was not a matter of storage capacity that produced the rupture
of negotiations, it was the layer structure that each imposed to each other (Sony 0.1, Toshiba two
of 0.6).

They imposed it because both systems have key features and infrastructure requirements (Toshiba also
regarding their selling point of the reuse of the DVD facilities with the two 0.6 design, similar to
DVD, Sony because their small pits that can be read only if the laser is very close to the surface,
0.1 mm).

If either one gave up on that it would mean a start from square one and a give up of their basic
concept.

I frankly thought they were negotiating the release of some kind of disc that was able to have in
one side the 0.6 format and on the other the 0.1 format, so the market would allow a consumer to
choose the player they want, the disc would be the same, with dual layers on both sides, but it
seems that in practice it was not a possibility.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
