Any suggestions from the forum regarding how to best to install a HD OTA
Antenna on the roof of my home? After spending an ungodly amount to install
the roof on my house due to all the hips etc it pains me to think that I
will need to make penetrations to install a roof top antenna. What do you
think the best long tern solution here?

Direct TV will not carrying local HD channels until 2007-2008 according to a
high up that responded to me.

James,

Considering your concerns with damaging your new roof, installing the antenna in the attic should
give good results under normal conditions of distance, flat terrain from the towers, no tall trees
at close distance, etc.

I have it that way since the late 90's and pick up far away signals from other states, and I have
dual tree lines right in front of the path.

A rotor might help if the www.antennaweb.org site tells you that the sources are at very different
places (enter your zip code and view the map).

A dual antenna could help instead if you mainly have two broad areas to cover as tower sources;
there was an article recently published in one of the popular video magazines using the approach of
a dual antenna for that scenario, you can put them both in the attic with the necessary equipment to
amplify and/or mix both sources.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Thanks Rodolfo,

I was thinking of doing that but was concerned about coverage. I am at the
limits regarding how far I am from the local TV stations however it makes
sense for me to first attempt an attic installation before attempting any
kind of roof install. Thanks again

I have done that with good results; however, some shingles, I have been
told, have a metallic content that blocks signal. A specific case was a 2
story house that I had an antenna in that would not get any appreciable
signal no matter where I put the antenna nor how I amped it. Yet, first
floor interior room got great results. Roofing contractor said that the
shingles had some metallic content and would cause that problem.

You just have to try it to see. Alternative is a pole from ground to above
roof strapped to chimney or house side that an antenna may be mounted on,
eliminating any roof penetration, giving more stability, and providing a
good ground for the pole. The cable still needs a good ground and surge
arrestor.
