HD Direct TV

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I just had Direct TV installed, I got the $199 deal on the HD Tivo by
purchasing their 4 room free deal and then when that was installed and
initialized I called 5 minutes later and was able to order the HD Tivo box.
It made no sense but this is what the CSR at Direct told me to do. What a
waste to have an installer come to my home install two dish's then come back
a couple of days later ,take them down to put up a HD dish.

It is unbelievable how little these guys know about HD or even the service
they install for. I wont get into all the specifics.

My question is that I ordered the High def package and was told I would have
to have an off air antenna hooked up for $50 to be able to get the local
networks in HD. When the guy came because of miscommunication he did not
have the antenna. He also said that he does not know what Direct would sell
me an antenna because where I live I would not be able to pull in the HD
signal.

When I called Direct I spoke with a supervisor and said that if I am unable
to get my local channels in HD as requested that I would like to receive a
feed somewhere else in the country that would give me HD network
programming. She said that due to FCC rulings that they are not able to do
this for me. I said that I thought that if I was unable to get the HD
picture that I coukd then sign a waiver to get the channels from another
market. She said no that since I can still receive the local channels in SD
that was all that they would be able to provide for me.

Can someone with Dish Network or Direct TV experience enlighten me on the
regulations here? I will be real ticked if I cannot get Network High
Definition programming.

Thanks

>From what I understand, if you are not within what they call the "B-grade"
signal of any given station (by your zip code), you can have the feeds
activated without a waiver. If your zip code is within the grade b signal,
then you have to get the station to grant you a waiver to receive the
feeds. They typically only do this after coming to your location to test
the signal strength.

how far are you from the towers? Is it a geographic or distance factor?
And have you tried antennaweb.org to see where your particular property
lies?

James,
DirecTV currently is not able to give you locals in HD. However, if you
live in a market where some or all of the local stations are owned and
operated (O&O) by the respective networks, you should get an automatic
waiver to receive either NY or LA locals in HD through DirecTV. If your
stations are not O&O, you may still be able to obtain a waiver, but this is
pretty rare from what I've heard. The local stations really don't want you
to watch the commercials in another town, since their advertisers are
keeping them on the air.

The good news is that DirecTV plans to begin offering locals in HD as they
transition to MPEG4 encoding. I believe that Detroit is slated to be the
"soft opening" market for this rollout, beginning this fall sometime.
Depending on which market you're in, it may be either a relatively short
time (probably some of the larger markets in 2006) or a long time (several
years) until they get to you.

Dish can only offer CBS HD to O&O markets presently, as they have no
agreements in place with ABC, FOX, or NBC. Their plans for HD locals are
not really known, except that they probably won't do all markets, only some
number of larger ones (I've heard "20" mentioned as a possibility). This
will be after their MPEG4 transition also. Hope this helps.

The initial HD LiL for DirecTV is 12 markets. They are still saying November
rollout, but no one has seen hardware to support it yet. That hardware was
curiously absent from CEDIA last week. It will require both a dish and STB
upgrade. In all cases, a truck roll.

That's all they can support with the Spaceway 1 satellite. Spaceway 2, which
is still on the ground, will be needed for subsequent markets.

There was a time that you could, but not anymore. New
rules have been layed down and DirecTV is following
them to a tee.
