HD-DVD Announcement from Toshiba

Here is a quote regarding two players from Toshiba. It appears to me they
are running scared of Blu-Ray and have set the price level quite low. Since
neither one will handle 1080p I'll be interested to see what Sony announces,
if anything. Competition is helping in this case.

"Toshiba plans to hit the US market with two HD DVD players this March,
targeting both mainstream consumers with the HD-A1 and early adopters with
the HD-XA1. Both models will support native HD in 720p and 1080i. The
higher-end model, the HD-XA1, will include four DSP engines for audio
output, along with two front USB ports, stabilizing feet and multiple user
interfaces. The HD-A1 is expected to retail for $499, while the HD-XA1 will
be $799."

Following on what I wrote below, Tweeter is already advertising the less
expensive one on their web site for pre-orders.

It seems that Hugh does not need to be at CES to know the latest and greatest.

They demo the "production" unit tonight for the press, it was pretty crowed. Tomorrow when they
open the floor I will double check the story about 1080p and connectivity. DBOX also announced an
external device to suit their units to handle HD DVD. They also announced 150 movies within 2006.

On Thursday I am going to the press meeting of Blu-ray as well, I would not be surprised if they
come out with something similar, otherwise they will be automatically loosing the format war.

It was ironic that the press presentation of HD DVD had a second "overflow" room where they showed
the product in a 4:3 screen in regular video, I could not stand the stupidity, so I went to the
other room, it was packed with just the press.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra
