----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----
"Larry, Shane,
But this article is a bit different, why?, it shows the writer has no idea
about the subject when he
says:
".... while the analog outs will be downconverted to traditional, non-HD
480i .... HD recording enthusiasts will not be happy about the lack of 1080i
and 720p flowing freely from the back of their new HD disc players"
Consumer HD recording is not made from analog outputs, is made from 1394
outputs, and he is not properly supporting the statement of the "not
recording ability" if only talking about component analog and HDMI.
It is too early to panic.
I have seen all these players for years, check their backs, look at their
changing features on them, talked to the engineers (the ones that speak
English), and the only common denominator is that NOT ONE of them is certain
of anything, and both HD DVD and Blu-ray can change some competitive feature
before their release just to beat the other.
One important difference Blu ray has is that they do not need any
authorization from the DVD Forum, they have their own association. One
important weakness of both is that the MPAA could disappoint the owners of 9
million legacy displays that only have component analog inputs.
Regarding that subject I just had and interesting exchange with the
manufacturer of the Oppu Digital DVD player that outputs DVI unprotected (of
HDCP), but now I am awaiting their approval of the draft and a response from
the DVD Forum before disclosing the information.
Best Regards,
Rodolfo La Maestra"
jsa-Not having analog HD outputs is a serious mistake. There are many
displays in use that do not have HDMI or DVI. Imagine the frustration and
anger of those that cannot use the new players. Will it get directed to
Congress and a new mandate developed? Especially since some of those that
will buy a DVD HD player will be Congressmen with older displays? It is not
advantageous for a industry to disappoint and anger their users. One product
I know I will be looking for at CEDIA is a converter for HDMI to component,
legal or not. If one is available yet not legal, I will direct my customers
to it, with caveats. Yes, I will install it if they ask. Punishing them is
inexcusable, especially considering the copy code will be broken and movies
sent via internet around the world. Most people I deal with do not care to
download or bootleg, they just want to buy a disc and enjoy, with the
ability to use the disc in more than one place.
I speak to the same engineers at CES, even the ones that speak no English,
and there no certainty about anything, just as Rodolfo said. They all are
waiting to see what the other is going to do before showing their hand, if
they even have one. I will put money on a bet that there will be HD DVD out
late this year, in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, it may just be a few
units, not enough to satisfy any demand.
